No plan to impeach Gov Diri, says Bayelsa Assembly

The Bayelsa House of Assembly has denied any plot to impeach Governor Douye Diri, describing the speculations as baseless and a distraction.

Bayelsa House Committee Chairman on Information, Mr Tari Porri, representing Ekeremor Constituency 1, dismissed the rumour that the sixth assembly planned to impeach the governor.

Porri was reacting to reports that the legislature was at dispute with the executive over the disbursement of N38 billion refunds from the Federal Government.

He stated this during a newsmen briefing in the conference room of the Bayelsa Speaker, in Yenagoa on Tuesday.

According to him, this is the second time such alleged impeachment plot against the incumbent governor of Bayelsa is making the rounds.

Porri said the state legislature had recorded such alleged impeachment in the past.

“The 6th Assembly under Speaker Abraham Ingobere have shown that they don’t know what those behind the alleged plot are talking about.

“The 6th Assembly have no reason to impeach the governor, we have never contemplated on that before.

“We strongly believe that those peddling such rumour never mean well for our dear state.

“Under the leadership of Hon. Abraham Ingobere, we have never thought of such for a man who have started most of his promises to his people,” he said.

The spokesman condemned such rumours, stressing that the assembly was working with the governor to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

The information committee chairman explained that the constitution had spelt out a process before impeachment could be carried out.

Porri said the 19 PDP members and their five APC colleagues were working with the governor and the leadership of the Bayelsa Assembly.

From Fashola to Sanwo-Olu: Why ex-governors are jealous, envious of Tinubu – Keyamo

Festus Keyamo

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Chief Spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Festus Keyamo, has claimed that former governors and other individuals are jealous of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Keyamo was reacting to comments credited to a former Director in the APC-PCC, Naja’atu Mohammed, who accused Tinubu of being an emperor, an autocratic leader in terms of controlling the governorship structure of Lagos State.

He stated that former governors are envious and jealous of Tinubu after they failed to install a loyal successor.

According to the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Tinubu has been lucky to have loyal successors after his tenure ad Lagos State governor.

Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Keyamo said: “Let me ask a very sincere question. I want people to be very honest with themselves. Which political leader in Nigeria has not tried to plant a successor?

“Whether it was Obasanjo when he was leaving for Yar’Adua or someone else, all the state governors from Sokoto to Cross Rivers, Borno, Kwara, Lagos, and Delta have made conscious attempts to promote a successor. Asiwaju has only promoted a successor. And he has been very lucky to have loyal successors. Others have not been lucky, which is why they turn on him with envy and jealousy.

“For others, the people they supported turned around to bite them. In 99 per cent of the states in Nigeria, all their successors have turned against them. Back then, in APGA, Peter Obi planted his successor, Willie Obiano. Obiano turned around and pushed him out of APGA.

“The only difference between Asiwaju and all of them is that, by God’s grace, he has been lucky to have extremely loyal successors because he has a Midas touch. Do you know why most of them revolted?

“Based on the reports that we have, the demand from their successor was choking. Some of them wanted to control the treasury. But if Asiwaju was that greedy, how is Lagos developing?

“Perhaps we should use this as a guide to look at Asiwaju. He must be doing something right.”

Naija News reports that Tinubu has successor install his successor since he left office as governor of Lagos State in 2007.

Those that have succeeded Tinubu include, Babatunde Raji Fashola (2007-2011 and 2011-2015), Akinwunmi Ambode (2015-2019) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (2019-incumbent)

“We will be looking at Feb. 25 when the Presidential and the National Assembly elections will take place.

“By the Grace of God, Nigerians will vote APC once again. On the 25th, the Presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu will be voted in as President of Nigeria by the grace of God alongside Sen. Kashim Shettima who is the Vice Presidential candidate.

“When it comes to the senatorial and House of Representatives, you know what it will be. It will be a landslide majority for the APC and the same thing for the House of Representatives.”

The supreme court on Monday affirmed Lawan, APC senatorial candidate for Yobe North.

In a majority judgment delivered by Justice Centus Nweze, the apex court allowed the appeal filed by the APC against Bashir Machina’s candidature.

Justice Monica Dongban-Mensen, who presided over a three-member panel of the appellate court, gave the affirmation in an appeal by the APC challenging the decision of Justice Fadimatu Aminu of the Federal High Court Damaturu.

Justice Aminu of the Federal High Court had on Sept.  28, 2022, declared Machina as winner of the primary election organised by the party on May 28, 2022.

However, having lost the APC presidential primary to Bola Tinubu, the party opted for Mr Lawan to replace Mr Machina.

But Mr Machina insisted that he would not withdraw for the Senate President.

In the face of the controversy, the APC submitted the Senate President’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as its senatorial candidate for Yobe North.

Not satisfied with the decision of his party, Mr Machina headed to court to seek redress.

Specifically, Mr Machina in his suit, asked the court to declare him as the validly elected senatorial candidate of the APC for Yobe north Senatorial District.

Justice Aminu had nullified the parallel primary election that produced Mr Lawan on June 9, 2022, insisting that the National Working Committee of the APC conducted a valid primary election on May 28, which was won by Bashir Machina.

Consequently, the trial judge ordered the APC to forward the name of Machina to INEC as the authentic winner of the primary election for Yobe North.

Tinubu most suitable to succeed Buhari, says Afenifere

Michael Ogungbemi

A pan-Yoruba socio-political group, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the most suitable and capable candidate to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, yesterday declared that Tinubu towered above all other candidates jostling for the plum position. The statement by its Ekiti State Publicity Secretary, Michael Ogungbemi, said the APC standard bearer remains the candidate to beat in the election based on his competence, experience, capacity, pedigree, strong political network, as well record of service.

He said that the former Lagos State governor with his magic wand and the problem-solving policy thrust would help tackle headlong the problems of insecurity, poverty, youth employment, economic instability and other challenges facing the country.

Ogungbemi said Tinubu’s track record of performance in Lagos has been adopted as a reference point in Nigeria’s chequered political trajectory, hence, the APC standard bearer is the best to take the baton after Buhari’s exit.
The chairman of the Ajoni Local Council Development Area of Ekiti State said other candidates were bereft of any record to flaunt to convince Nigerians that they have better programmes than Tinubu.
