Northern Coalition Warns Tinubu as Wike Accused of Political Overreach

ABUJA — The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has accused Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of political intimidation and overreach, warning that his actions undermine democracy and calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene.

In a statement signed by National Coordinator Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the coalition alleged that Wike has repeatedly overstepped the boundaries of his office, interfering in matters beyond his constitutional mandate, including political party affairs and opposition activities.

Charanchi highlighted what he described as Wike’s manipulation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed, calling it a blatant misuse of power. The coalition argued that the EFCC’s dismissal of Governor Mohammed’s claims as “wild” and “far-fetched” raises concerns about the independence of the anti-graft agency.

“The EFCC’s insistence that no political officeholder can influence its investigations rings hollow in light of current circumstances,” Charanchi said. He added that the timing of investigations into Governor Mohammed, given his past legal challenges, raises serious questions about political motivations.

The CNG urged President Tinubu to check Wike’s actions to protect his administration’s integrity, warning that continued abuses could erode democratic principles and public trust in governance.

The coalition also called on all Nigerians to defend democracy, resist intimidation, and ensure that political accountability applies to all officeholders, regardless of party affiliation. It urged the EFCC to focus strictly on its statutory mandate of combating financial crimes without succumbing to political pressure.
