Northern Elders Back Tinubu, Oppose Marafa’s Foreign Intervention Proposal
A coalition of Northern elders has strongly condemned former Zamfara Central Senator Kabiru Marafa for urging the United States to intervene militarily in Nigeria, describing the statement as reckless, unpatriotic and dangerous to national stability.
In a communiqué issued on Sunday after its annual general meeting in Birnin Kebbi, the elders said Marafa’s remarks were “ridiculous” and capable of inciting unrest at a time the nation is struggling to contain widespread insecurity.
The National Coordinator of the coalition, Malam Yusuf Abubakar, stressed that the North would not endorse any position that threatens Nigeria’s sovereignty or invites foreign military intervention.
“We view the statement as a demonstration of deep unpatriotism. Such dangerous comments only heighten tension and undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace,” he said.

He urged Northern political leaders to collaborate with governors in addressing insecurity and poverty, rather than politicising the region’s challenges.
The group called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate Marafa, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security agencies are already implementing renewed strategies to stabilise the country.
They also urged security operatives to probe politicians in Zamfara and Katsina allegedly spreading fake news capable of fuelling tensions.
The elders commended the Federal Government’s ongoing security operations in the North-West and appealed to traditional and religious leaders to use their influence to promote unity and peaceful coexistence.
The coalition further rejected calls for the removal of Deputy Defence Minister Bello Matawalle, describing such demands as unnecessary and politically motivated.
