Obi backs labour party candidate, insists on free and fair Anambra governorship poll

Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared his support for his party’s governorship flag bearer but maintained that his priority is a transparent and credible election on November 8.

Speaking with journalists in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area, Obi said he would not engage in vote buying or any electoral malpractice, stressing that the will of the people must prevail.

“As a member of the Labour Party, I am supporting our candidate, but not to the extent of vote buying because I can never buy votes,” he said. “I want the election to be totally free and fair. I’m not on the ballot, and I believe all those contesting are related to me one way or the other. Let Anambra people decide who will be their governor.”

Obi described all the governorship hopefuls as his friends and urged them to place the interest of the state above personal ambition.

The former governor, who reminded reporters that he left office 12 years ago, added that he has no personal stake in the outcome of the poll and would not interfere in the people’s choice.

Meanwhile, Obi donated N30 million to two health institutions in the state on Wednesday—N15 million each to the School of Nursing, Adazi Nnukwu, and the University on the Niger Teaching Hospital, Ogidi.

He said similar interventions have been scheduled across the country over the next month and encouraged students to take their studies seriously, stressing that “the future belongs to them.”
