Offa bank robbery: Drama as police arrest suspect’s sister
Offa bank robbery: Drama as police arrest suspect’s sister
The ongoing trial of the April 5, 2018 deadly bank robbery in Offa, Kwara State, took a dramatic twist on Friday as police arrested one Omolara Ogundiran, a sister of one of the suspects.
Omolara, a graduate of Ire Poly, Osogbo, is the younger sister of the 5th defendant, Niyi Ogundiran.
She was taken away around past 3:40 pm by operatives of the Kwara State Police Command immediately after the trial that started at 9:00 am.
The defence counsel, Barrister Mathias Emeribe, told pressmen that he would have to find out the reason for the arrest.
“Why they are arresting her, I don’t know. But she is one of our witnesses who had come to tender documents and I have been told that they wanted her at the state CID in respect of the matter. Until I get there before I know what the situation is.
“They intended taking her away earlier but I resisted it because she is a witness and I wouldn’t want a situation where after she had gone, the testimony she would give would be different from what she is supposed to give.
“So I sought the protection of the court which was graciously granted by the trial judge that she can only be taken away after the court has ruled in respect of the matter”, Emeribe noted.
However, speaking on the arrest, prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacob (SAN) said “there are bold consequences for trying to deceive the court.”
“You heard from the proceedings today (Friday) where the witness went to Osogbo to collect a fresh receipt that bothers on the issue that his brother was there to buy spare parts on the day of the robbery. She was issued a receipt dated April 5, 2018 which she brought to the court.
“But you had her telling the court that the receipt was issued last year backdated to the date of the crime,” Jacob added.
He said both parties had closed their cases and would now proceed to address the court for the adoption of written addresses after which the court would adjourn for judgment.
Earlier while giving evidence, Omolara (PW11) had told the court that she “went to Osogbo to collect a receipt for some motor spare parts of the vehicle bought by Niyi on the day of the robbery.”
She added, “When I got to Mallam Ali shop (motor spare parts seller), I met him attending to a customer and he said I should sit down and prayed for one not to be unfortunate in any situation.

“So he opened the receipt and saw the duplicate before he issued another one to me and I left. I saw Mallam Ali inside the court premises today and he greeted me. But I can’t see him inside the court now.”
However, during cross examination, Omolara told the court that “I am a Christian and attended primary school in Ise Ekiti. I also went to secondary school in Oro but don’t remember the name before I proceeded to Ire Poly for my OND.
“I can’t remember the day, month, but it was last year 2023 that I went to Osogbo for the receipt. Mallam Ali wrote the receipt in my presence before he gave it to me and wrote the date that my brother came to buy the items (backdated it to April 5, 2018).
“I didn’t go to Osogbo with Niyi Ogundiran, the 5th defendant. I didn’t sign the customer’s section in the receipt but Mallam Ali did and I cannot remember who signed it.
“When I came back to Ilọrin, the receipt was with me and I only gave it to my lawyer when they were talking about it. I was in court when my brother was given evidence on the case. Niyi and I are siblings but it’s God that will fight for him not me”, she submitted.
In her ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Halimat Salman, rejected the receipt as evidence, describing it as a sham.
She said the defendant cannot seek to tender any evidence through the backdoor while they had all the opportunity to do so at various stages of the trial since it started over five years.
She adjourned the case till Tuesday April 9, 2024 for adoption of written addresses by the counsel.
At the resumed hearing on January 16, 2024, the fifth defendant, Niyi Ogundiran, who is the ninth witness, told the court that he could not remember his date of birth, age nor the number of years he stayed in secondary school which he attended before he dropped out.
Prosecution counsel pointed it out to Ogundiran that he did not state in any of his statements that he was not in Offa on the day of the incident.
However, the witness, while being examined by his own counsel, said that the statement he gave police was made under duress, adding that he was tortured by police, who he said asked him to cooperate with them.
He also said that he was taken to his hometown in Oro for search of his house, where he said that only N2,000 was found by a team of police investigators after the search of his three rooms and parlour.
Other suspects arrested over the incident were policeman Michael Adikwu (deceased), Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Ibikunle Ogunleye and Adeola Abraham.
Ayoade Akinnibosun and four others are currently standing trial in the case which began on November 11, 2018.
The suspected armed robbers attacked five commercial banks in Offa killing over 30 persons in the process, including nine policemen.
They were charged by the police with criminal conspiracy to rob the banks, murder of nine policemen and other citizens, and illegal possession of firearms.
Michael Adikwu died in police custody while the remaining five pleaded not guilty.

Ex–Fire Captain Jailed for Life for Killing Fiancée, Her Son Over Movie Argument
A former California fire captain, Darin McFarlin, 47, has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of murdering his fiancée and her 7-year-old son following a domestic dispute that began over a disagreement while watching a movie.
According to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred on 21 August 2025 inside McFarlin’s home, where he was watching a film with his fiancée, 29-year-old Marissa Divodi-Lessa Herzog, and her two children.
The movie, later identified as the 2008 Christian drama Fireproof, reportedly triggered an argument after McFarlin became upset over its portrayal of a firefighter character. The disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation inside the home.

Prosecutors said the situation deteriorated into a domestic violence incident in which McFarlin attacked Divodi-Lessa. Although she attempted to escape and seek help, the situation turned fatal when he used a firearm during the confrontation.
At the time of the incident, Divodi-Lessa’s two children, aged 7 and 9, were present in the home. The court heard that the 7-year-old boy was also killed during the attack, while the 9-year-old girl narrowly escaped and survived after fleeing to safety.
Authorities later arrested McFarlin within hours of the incident, while the surviving child was found safe.
During sentencing on 13 April 2026, the court handed McFarlin two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, along with an additional life term and further penalties amounting to 50 years to life and 15 years.
The judge described the case as a devastating example of domestic violence that escalated into irreversible tragedy, stressing the need for accountability in violent household disputes.
Prosecutors noted that the case underscored the dangers of unresolved domestic conflict and the importance of early intervention in situations involving emotional and physical abuse.

NDLEA Dismantles Drug Syndicate, Seizes Cocaine Hidden in Food Flasks
NDLEA Dismantles Drug Syndicate, Seizes Cocaine Hidden in Food Flasks
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a large-scale drug trafficking network involving cocaine, cannabis (skunk/loud), tramadol, and other controlled substances, with coordinated operations leading to arrests and seizures across Lagos, Kaduna, Edo, Delta, Cross River, and other states.
The agency revealed that one of its most significant interceptions took place at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, where operatives discovered 12 parcels of cocaine concealed in the false bottom of food flasks bound for the United Kingdom via a Virgin Atlantic flight. The consignment, weighing 2.80kg, was seized on April 9, 2026, during a routine inspection at the export shed.
Two cargo agents, Ama Obinna Ufeim and Ogabi Monday Akorede, were arrested at the scene, while a follow-up operation led to the arrest of the alleged sender, Agoro Tajudeen Moninuola, a 52-year-old freight and forwarding agent.
In a separate operation at the same airport, NDLEA operatives intercepted 2.90kg of “Loud,” a strong strain of cannabis, hidden inside snack food packs imported from the United States via a Delta Airlines flight. Two clearing agents, Animashaun Moshood Adetunji and Mercy Gabriel Oluwasegun, were initially arrested, while the consignee, Saheed Adeshina Adegoke, a 29-year-old fashion designer, was later apprehended in Lagos.

The agency also reported a major seizure in Kaduna State, where operatives intercepted a trailer loaded with cement along the Kaduna–Zaria highway. A search uncovered 847kg of skunk concealed inside 760 cement blocks and 33 jumbo bags, leading to the arrest of the truck driver, Umar Garba Haruna.
In Cross River State, NDLEA operatives, supported by soldiers, raided a forest farm in Uwet community, Akamkpa LGA, destroying about 15,000kg of skunk cultivated on six hectares of farmland and recovering 119kg of the substance. A female suspect, Alice Sunday Udoh, was arrested.
Similarly, in Edo State, operatives destroyed over 2,281kg of cannabis at Saboro camp, Ovia North East LGA, arresting suspects including Nweke Smart, Christopher Egbe, and Monday Ayan. In Delta State, two suspects, Sunday Odili and Ijenebe Joshua, were arrested with 87.8kg of skunk and cannabis seeds.
In Lagos, NDLEA officers also intercepted a truck along the Lagos–Badagry expressway carrying 11,900 capsules of tramadol and 400 ampoules of phenobarbital injection en route to Ghana. Suspects Chinedu Ogbekene and Zindozin Aloukou Bienvenu were arrested.
In another Lagos Island operation, a two-storey building at Petti was raided, resulting in the recovery of 95.8kg of skunk.
The NDLEA said it has also intensified its nationwide War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, with sensitisation programmes held in schools, religious centres, and communities across the country.
Chairman of the agency, Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations nationwide, praising their efforts in drug supply reduction, drug trafficking interception, and anti-narcotics enforcement, while urging sustained vigilance against evolving drug smuggling tactics.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug cartels and curbing the spread of illicit substances across Nigeria and beyond.

Eight Kidnapped UTME Candidates Freed in Benue After Three Days
Eight Kidnapped UTME Candidates Freed in Benue After Three Days
Eight of the passengers rescued from last Wednesday’s Benue Links bus abduction have been identified as candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), highlighting growing security concerns around the nationwide examination.
The victims were among passengers on an 18-seater Benue Links vehicle hijacked by gunmen on April 15, 2026, while travelling to Otukpo, Benue State, to sit for their exams. The incident occurred along a known flashpoint, further underscoring the vulnerability of commuters on intercity routes.
They regained their freedom in the early hours of Sunday after spending about three days in captivity, following coordinated security efforts involving the police and other agencies.
The rescued individuals, including three female candidates, were subsequently brought to the Benue State Government House in Makurdi by the State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, alongside their parents and guardians, for official reception by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Sources at the Government House said the victims appeared visibly exhausted and traumatised after their ordeal, while documentation and profiling processes were ongoing ahead of their formal reception by the governor.
Security authorities disclosed that the victims were rescued through sustained pressure on the kidnappers, including intelligence-driven operations that forced the criminals to abandon them. No casualties were reported during the rescue.
The abduction had sparked widespread concern, particularly as it involved students travelling to write the 2026 UTME. Education stakeholders and parents have since raised alarm over the safety of candidates commuting long distances to examination centres.
Officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board have reiterated that candidates affected by verified emergencies, including insecurity, will be given the opportunity to reschedule their examinations in line with the board’s contingency provisions.
Meanwhile, the incident has renewed calls for tighter security across major highways and around Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres during examination periods. Stakeholders are urging closer collaboration between examination bodies, transport operators, and security agencies to safeguard candidates.
In recent months, there has been heightened concern over attacks on travellers in parts of North-Central Nigeria, with commuters increasingly vulnerable to kidnappings along key transit routes.
Authorities in Benue State have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators of the bus abduction and prevent a recurrence, as investigations continue.
