Olubadan Ignores Alaafin’s Greeting
Olubadan Explains Viral Video, Says He Did Not Snub Alaafin of Oyo
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has dismissed claims circulating online that he deliberately ignored the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, during a recent inter-faith programme in Ibadan, describing the reports as exaggerated and taken out of context.
Speaking to journalists in Ibadan, Oba Ladoja said the widely discussed incident was neither intentional nor an act of disrespect, explaining that protocol, seating arrangements and timing were responsible for what occurred.
“There was no intention whatsoever,” the Olubadan said. “What happened was not deliberate. It has been misinterpreted, particularly on social media.”
He explained that he arrived at the venue slightly late and tried to take his seat quietly to avoid disrupting the programme, noting that his movement was guided strictly by the seating layout.
“When I go late to a place, I try not to disturb proceedings. Just like in a mosque when prayers are ongoing, you wait until people are properly arranged before joining. I was only trying to take my seat,” he said.

Clarifying further, Oba Ladoja said his designated seat was positioned between the Soun of Ogbomoso and the Alaafin of Oyo, which required him to move through certain sections of the hall.
“My seat was between the Soun and the Alaafin. I had to pass through some people to get there. I did not take any decision to avoid or ignore anyone. Why should I?” he asked.
The monarch expressed concern that short video clips shared online fueled misconceptions, stressing that they failed to capture the full sequence of events.
“If you watch the full video, you will see that I greeted people, including the Oyo State Governor. Social media often takes things out of context,” he said.
On suggestions of strained relations between the royal institutions, the Olubadan dismissed such claims, stating that there was no animosity and that communication had already taken place.
“I don’t believe anyone was being offensive, and I do not see the issue as an insult to anybody,” he added.
Beyond the controversy, Oba Ladoja reaffirmed his commitment to unity, peace and societal development, particularly among the youth, emphasizing the need to raise standards in education and focus on collective progress.
