Atiku Cannot Bribe ADC Delegates With Billions, Says Dele Momodu
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has dismissed claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar possesses billions of dollars to bribe delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primary, insisting that such allegations misunderstand the nature of campaign financing.
Momodu made the clarification while speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, where he addressed questions on how the ADC intends to manage the presidential ambitions of its leading figures.
According to him, campaign funding should not be confused with delegate bribery, stressing that financial resources are required mainly for legitimate logistics, mobilisation and election-day operations.
“It’s not just about money. When we talk about money, there are logistics. We’re not talking about bribing,” Momodu said.
He cited examples from global politics to support his argument, noting that financial strength alone does not guarantee electoral victory.
“Even in America, Kamala Harris outperformed Donald Trump in terms of fundraising. She had over a billion dollars to spend and still didn’t win,” he stated.

Momodu explained that campaign funds are crucial to protecting votes during elections, including deploying agents to polling units and ensuring results are not manipulated.
“On election day, you need to manage every polling booth. Make sure nobody rewrites your votes or steals them. That’s what we mean by money,” he added.
Speaking on Atiku Abubakar’s financial capacity, Momodu stressed that the former vice president does not control state resources, unlike some other political actors.
“Atiku is a businessman. He has been a businessman since he left power in 2007. He does not control any state in Nigeria,” he said.
He contrasted this with other influential figures, saying, “Asiwaju controls at least Lagos State, and Nyesom Wike controls Rivers State.”
Rejecting suggestions that Atiku could bribe delegates with billions of dollars, Momodu said such claims lack logic.
“Atiku doesn’t have that. He’s been managing his business. So where will he get the billions of dollars to spend on bribing delegates?” he queried.
Momodu further alleged that strategic planning, rather than financial muscle, played a role in outmaneuvering political rivals during past contests.
“That’s why they used strategy to outsmart Wike, and that’s why Wike became inconsolable. Till today, Wike has not recovered because he was so sure nobody could match him dollar for dollar,” he added.
