Oluomo: Reinstate Baruwa as NURTW president, Falana tells FG

Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has asked the Nigerian federal government to restore Comrade Tajudeen Baruwa as the president of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW.

On the 9th of November, 2024, Southwest Zone of the NURTW elected Alhaji Musliu Akinsaya, popularly known as MC Oluomo as the union’s National President.

MC Oluomo’s election has created confusion in the union with many condemning and speaking ill of his inauguration.

Two days ago, NURTW leadership, led by Alhaji Ibikunle Tajudeen Baruwa, declared the inauguration of MC Oluomo as illegal, null, and void, citing rulings from the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal that affirmed Baruwa as the legitimate president.

However, joining his voice, Falana in a statement to Vanguard, advised the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi SAN and the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun to ensure that Comrade Baruwa is restored as national president of NURTW without further delay.

His words: “On August 28, 2023, a gang of armed thugs invaded the National Secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Abuja. One of the security men guarding the said Secretariat was killed by the armed invaders.

“At the end of the violent invasion, the Secretariat was seized while the elected President, Comrade Tajudeen Baruwa and members of his Executive were arrested and charged with murder before a Magistrate Court in the Federal Capital Territory. However, the charge of murder was withdrawn and struck out after the successful but illegal seizure of the Secretariat!

“As a law abiding citizen, Comrade Baruwa approached the National Industrial Court for legal redress. In a judgment delivered on March 11, 2024, the Court confirmed Comrade Baruwa and members of his Executive as the elected leaders of the NURTW.

“Dissatisfied with the judgment, the opponents of Comrade Baruwa appealed to the Court of Appeal. On November 8, 2024, the Court of Appeal delivered its judgment. The Justices of the Court dismissed the appeal and confirmed the judgment of the National Industrial Court which had recognised Comrade Baruwa as the President of the NURTW.

“In view of the foregoing, we call on the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi SAN and the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun to ensure that Comrade Baruwa is restored to his office in strict compliance with the judgments of the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal”.

Electricity: NERC directs DisCos to replace old meters free

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed distribution companies (DisCos) to replace obsolete meters for their customers at no cost.

This mandate was outlined in a statement released by the regulatory body’s management on Monday.

The directive follows recent reports of some electricity companies requiring customers to replace Unistar prepaid meters.

NERC emphasized that the cost of meter replacement falls solely on the distribution companies and reiterated that no customer should be subjected to estimated billing.

“The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is aware that some Distribution Companies (DisCos) have instructed customers to apply and pay for the replacement of faulty and obsolete meters within their franchise areas.

“This instruction contravenes the Commission’s Order No. NERC/246/2021 on the Structured Replacement of Faulty and Obsolete end-use Customer Meters in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. The Order clearly states that no customer with a meter should be forcefully migrated to estimated billing.  

“If any customer’s meter is adjudged by any DisCo to be obsolete or faulty, it is the responsibility of the DisCo to replace the meter free of charge, provided that the fault was not caused by the customer,” NERC said.

Obasanjo failed to lay solid foundation for Nigeria’s democracy  – Presidency

Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare, has lambasted a former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Dare in a statement on his X Platform, formerly (Twitter), described Obasanjo’s regime as the most corrupt government in the history of Nigeria.

He said that Obasanjo has no moral right to condemn any government, noting that he should apologize to Nigerians for not laying the foundational infrastructure Nigeria needed to advance.

Recall that the former military head of state, had in his keynote lecture titled, “Leadership failure and the state of corruption in Nigeria”, delivered at the Chinua Achebe leadership forum at Yale University, a coveted institution in America, opined that Nigeria is a ‘failing state’ under president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s watch.

“the more the immorality and corruption of a nation, the more the nation sinks into chaos, insecurity, conflict, and disunity. “The failing state status of Nigeria is confirmed and glaringly indicated for all to see”.

Obasanjo had also called for the dismissal of the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, and officials of the commission at all levels as part of a reform of the electoral process in Nigeria.

“As a matter of urgency, we must ensure the INEC Chairperson and their staff are thoroughly vetted. The vetting exercise should produce dispassionate, non-partisan actors with impeccable reputations.

“Nigeria must ensure the appointment of new credible INEC leadership at the federal, state, local government, and municipal – city, town, and village – levels, with short tenures to prevent undesirable political influence and corruption, and to re-establish trust in the electoral system by its citizens,” he said.

He argued that “The INEC Chairperson must not only be absolutely above board but must also be transparently independent and incorruptible.”

Irked with his speech, Dare noted that Obasanjo’s statement lacked sincerity, adding that democracy suffered mortal wounds under his watch.

His words: “Former President Obasanjo is a man with a tremendous capacity for mischief and Nigerians know it. His journey along the path of hallucinations has never been in doubt. So is his descent into muddling facts, forgetting that he ran a Presidency on record as the most corrupt. His recent diatribe at Yale University lacks sincerity.

“It is actually laughable that Obasanjo’s pretentiousness about fighting corruption is not cutting any ice in the eyes of the general public. We all know what happened under his watch and how, up till the present moment, there has been no explanation as to how he wasted a whopping $16bn in generating megawatts of darkness across the nation. But that is not even the issue.

“Democracy suffered mortal wounds under his watch only capped by his murderous rage for an ill-fated 3rd term. Successive administrations struggled to clean up the mess Obasanjo left behind, which President Tinubu is now making progress with. Obasanjo has lost any moral right to condemn any government. He should apologise to Nigerians for not laying the foundational infrastructure Nigeria needed to advance.

“The Yoruba proverb, “A o ki n wo ariwo oja, eniti a anba na oja ni a n wo”. This means that you shouldn’t pay heed to the market’s noise. Rather, keep an eye on the person you are negotiating with. This is instructive. In this market called Nigeria, the man with the renewed hope agenda is the one that matters and indeed Nigerians.  Everything else is ariwo oja. This administration will stay focused in bringing relief to Nigerians. Obasanjo’s remarks reflect the infantilist nature of market noise.

“President Tinubu will Stay the Course in seeing through the reforms he has instituted for a better Nigeria.

“The point here is that Obasanjo should take time off this habit of pulling down leaders, especially his successors and try to interrogate himself on how he has contributed to the parlous state of the Nigerian nation which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now spiritedly battling to put back on the track of development. We thank former President Obasanjo for agreeing that “Yes, there is hope”. That’s the Renewed Hope Agenda President Tinubu is about and it’s on track. We are happy to have that conversation with the former President”.

Bandits kill farmer, abduct 6 others in Taraba

A farmer, identified as Alhaji Mai Wanda Maibultu, has been reportedly k!lled, and six others abducted by suspected bandits in Garbatau, Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident, which occurred over the weekend, saw Maibultu, a prominent large-scale farmer in the area, attacked on his farm. The six other victims were reportedly kidnapped from Garbatau village, a farming community nestled between two mountains, a few kilometers from Garba Chede town.

Residents disclosed that the kidnappers have contacted the families of the abducted farmers, demanding a ransom of N100 million for their release. Adamu Dauda, a resident of Maihula town, noted that this was not the first time such an incident had occurred, recounting how last year, hundreds of kidnappers invaded the area, abducting several farmers and halting their crop harvests.

“This time, the farmers were in the process of harvesting their crops, but the kidnappers have disrupted it again,” Dauda lamented, expressing frustration over the recurring attacks.

 

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the persistent insecurity in the region, which continues to jeopardize the livelihood of farmers and the food supply chain in the state.
