Oluwo appeals to NEMA for intervention as rainstorms wreak havoc in Iwo

The Paramount Ruler of Iwoland, HIM Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to come to the aid of the victims of rainstorm in Iwo.

It could be recalled that the first rain heralding a new season two days ago was accompanied with thunderous storm destroying properties including schools, electric poles, houses, shops and some public assets in Iwo.

Oluwo, while commiserating with the victims, called on the authority of NEMA, the federal and state governments to come to the aid of affected individuals.

Oba Akanbi described the damage done by the storm as monumental which has paralyzed commercial activities in the ancient town. He disclosed that forty electric poles were broken which have prevented electricity supply to Iwo and grossly hampered economic activities.

He further revealed the incident has rendered hundreds of people homeless and many goods damaged during the heavy storm.

A statement released by Oluwo through his press secretary, Alli Ibraheem, on Saturday read: “I commiserate with my people who had their properties damaged by the rainstorm heralding new season. I’m worried about the monumental destruction of the public and private properties in Iwo.

“I appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their intervention. About forty concrete electric poles were broken. St. Mary Grammar School, Iwo had the roofs of 10 classrooms removed, Oluwo Central Mosque roof and Iwo Customary Court roofs were also affected. Hundreds were rendered homeless, shops and goods inside were destroyed.”

“For 3 days ago when the incidence happened, there is no electricity light in Iwo. We have been experiencing a blackout. This is a critical moment in the lives of the people of Iwo. The federal and state governments should come to our aid. Many shop owners running their businesses with loans are groaning. NEMA should please console us,” the monarch said.

“I pray such will not happen in Iwo again. We thank God no casualty was recorded,” he added.
