Onitsha Market Traders Defy IPOB Sit-At-Home Order, Reopen Shops
Traders at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State have boldly defied a sit-at-home order issued by IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra), reopening their shops and resuming business despite threats of disruption.
Market leaders explained that the decision was driven by the need to safeguard livelihoods and sustain the commercial activities that support thousands of traders and workers in the area. Many traders expressed frustration over repeated sit-at-home directives, which they say disrupt the local economy and threaten the financial survival of families.

Security personnel were reportedly deployed across the market to ensure law and order, allowing traders and customers to conduct transactions safely. Business owners emphasized that the market is a critical economic hub in southeastern Nigeria, and prolonged closures would have severe consequences for the region’s economy.
Community leaders and trade associations have praised the traders’ resilience, describing their action as a stand against economic disruption and intimidation. They called for dialogue and peaceful coexistence, urging both political groups and residents to respect commerce while maintaining security.
The incident underscores a growing trend in southeastern Nigeria, where residents and traders are increasingly resisting repeated sit-at-home orders, reflecting tension between political activism and the everyday economic needs of ordinary citizens.
Authorities have assured that while they respect the rights of political groups to express their views, the protection of businesses and livelihoods remains a top priority, with ongoing monitoring to prevent violence or disruption.
