Aisha Yesufu Claims Nigerian Government Uses Hunger, Poverty to Control Citizens

Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has accused the Nigerian government of deliberately using hunger and poverty as instruments to manipulate and control the population, warning that citizens’ survival struggles are being exploited for political gain.

Yesufu made the claims while commenting on Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis, citing rising food prices, unemployment, and inflation as factors that undermine citizens’ capacity to challenge authority or demand accountability. She argued that when people are preoccupied with meeting basic needs, they are less likely to engage in civic activism or hold government officials accountable for policy failures.

According to the activist, the deliberate neglect of social welfare programs and failure to implement effective economic reforms exacerbate inequality and deepen poverty, which she described as a tool of political control. Yesufu urged the government to prioritise citizens’ welfare, empowerment, and dignity, insisting that true leadership requires policies that lift people out of hardship rather than keep them dependent and silent.

Her remarks have triggered widespread discussion online, drawing support from social commentators who agree that economic pressures have weakened public resistance. Critics, however, maintain that poverty and hunger are long-standing structural issues, not deliberate strategies by the government.

Yesufu’s allegations come amid mounting concerns over the cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria, as millions struggle with declining purchasing power and increasing household expenses. Analysts say her comments highlight the urgent need for transparent governance, targeted social interventions, and sustainable economic policies to address the root causes of poverty and insecurity in the country.

The activist’s statements have reignited debate over the intersection of governance, economic hardship, and citizen empowerment, prompting calls for stronger measures to ensure that citizens are not left vulnerable to systemic neglect or political exploitation.
