Osimhen Brace Fires Super Eagles into AFCON 2025 Quarter-Finals with 4–0 Rout of Mozambique
Victor Osimhen delivered a masterclass as the Super Eagles of Nigeria sealed a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique to book their place in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals following a convincing Round of 16 clash in Fès, Morocco.
Nigeria maintained their perfect run at the tournament, building on an impressive group-stage performance where they won all three matches to top Group C, further strengthening their credentials as strong contenders for the continental title.
Mozambique, who reached the knockout phase for the first time after finishing among the best third-placed teams in Group F, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity, tactical discipline, and attacking firepower.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman calmly finished off an assist from Akor Adams to put the Super Eagles ahead. Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s advantage just five minutes later with a clinical strike, before completing his brace early in the second half, converting another assist from Lookman in the 47th minute to make it 3–0.

Adams crowned Nigeria’s dominant display with a fourth goal in the 75th minute, capping a performance that saw the Super Eagles control possession, territory, and scoring chances throughout the encounter.
Nigeria’s midfield trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Alex Iwobi dictated the tempo, while Stanley Nwabali, returning in goal, was largely untested as Mozambique failed to mount a serious challenge.
The defensive unit of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi remained solid, extending Nigeria’s impressive defensive record at AFCON 2025.
Head coach Eric Chelle introduced fresh legs in the second half, bringing on Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze, Tom Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika, and Moses Simon, ensuring Nigeria maintained their momentum while preserving key players for the next round.
By the closing stages, Nigeria had recorded eight shots on target, underlining their dominance as Mozambique were kept at bay.
The victory keeps Nigeria firmly on course for a fourth AFCON title, following previous triumphs in 1980, 1994, and 2013. The Super Eagles will now face the winners of the Round of 16 tie between Algeria and DR Congo as the tournament heads into a highly competitive quarter-final stage.

Liverpool Edge Sunderland 1-0 to Halt Impressive Home Streak
Liverpool brought an end to Sunderland’s unbeaten home run with a hard-fought 1-0 win in a tightly contested encounter that underlined the visitors’ title ambitions.
In front of a packed stadium, Sunderland came into the match boasting an impressive home record, having gone several games without defeat on their own turf. However, Liverpool’s discipline, tactical organisation and cutting edge in the final third proved decisive.
The breakthrough came after sustained pressure from the Reds, who dominated possession for large spells while Sunderland remained compact and dangerous on the counterattack. A well-worked move eventually unlocked the hosts’ defence, with Liverpool capitalising on a defensive lapse to score what turned out to be the winning goal.

Why CAF May Postpone 2027 AFCON
Why CAF May Postpone 2027 AFCON
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly considering postponing the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to 2028 due to delays in stadium construction, logistical challenges, and scheduling conflicts across the three East African host nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The CAF executive committee is expected to meet soon in Dar es Salaam to discuss the potential delay and the future of the tournament.
The 2027 edition, nicknamed the “Pamoja” AFCON, is set to be the first co-hosted by three countries and will feature 24 national teams. Originally scheduled for June–July 2027, CAF has expressed concerns that the hosts may not complete critical stadium and training facility upgrades, raising questions about their ability to meet CAF’s strict standards for safety, broadcasting, and operational readiness.
Why CAF Is Considering a Postponement
According to reports, CAF’s potential delay is driven by several key factors:
- Infrastructure Challenges: Stadiums and training facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda still require upgrades to meet CAF and FIFA standards.
- Operational Concerns: Security, ticketing, and logistical challenges observed during the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) highlight risks of hosting a larger-scale tournament.

- Scheduling Conflicts: The 2027 AFCON timeline overlaps with 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and other international fixtures, complicating player release and team preparations.
CAF has deployed technical inspection teams to assess major venues across the three host nations. These include Kasarani, Nyayo, and Talanta Stadiums in Kenya, Benjamin Mkapa and Arusha Samia Suluhu Stadiums in Tanzania, and Mandela National Stadium and Hoima City Stadium in Uganda. The inspections aim to ensure the stadiums meet CAF safety, capacity, and broadcasting standards.
Host Nations’ Response
Despite concerns, host countries remain confident. Tanzania and Kenya have highlighted ongoing renovations and improvements, while Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring readiness. Officials say they are working closely with CAF to meet all tournament requirements in time.
Implications of a Postponement
If the 2027 AFCON is postponed:
- National Team Schedules would need adjustment, impacting qualifiers and preparation for other CAF competitions.
- Commercial Agreements and sponsorship deals may require renegotiation to align with new dates.
- The delay could coincide with CAF’s broader calendar restructuring, including the launch of the African Nations League, aimed at increasing competitive opportunities for African players.
CAF is expected to release an official statement following the executive committee meeting, confirming whether the tournament will proceed as planned or be postponed to 2028.

Ademola Lookman has described his La Liga home debut for Atletico Madrid as a “very special moment” despite the team suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat to Real Betis. The Nigerian international winger highlighted both the excitement of making his debut at the Metropolitano and the disappointment of missing key opportunities during the match.
Lookman came close to leveling the score with a well-placed header that was ruled out for a marginal offside and later received a yellow card, but he remained optimistic about the experience. “Not the result we wanted but we stay positive. Very special moment making my debut in the Metropolitano. Aupa Atleti,” he wrote on social media following the game.

His energy and involvement in Atletico’s offensive play were praised, signaling that the Nigerian forward could become a key figure in the team’s attack in the coming weeks.
This appearance comes after a standout performance in the Copa del Rey, where Lookman scored and assisted in a convincing 5–0 victory over Real Betis, marking an impressive start to his career at Atletico Madrid after moving from Atalanta. His speed, dribbling, and finishing ability have already earned recognition from fans and football pundits alike.
Lookman expressed his happiness at joining Atletico Madrid, calling the move a “blessing” and emphasising his eagerness to adapt, improve, and contribute in Spain’s top flight. His arrival is seen as a boost not only for the club but also for Nigerian football representation in Europe, with compatriot Umar Sadiq praising the talent and impact Lookman brings to the league.
Despite the loss, Lookman’s bittersweet debut offers hope for Atletico fans as the team navigates La Liga and Copa del Rey commitments. Analysts suggest that if Lookman continues his promising form, he could play a pivotal role in Atletico’s attacking strategy, helping the club compete for domestic titles while maintaining his rising profile in European football.
