Oyo State Begins Food Subsidy Scheme for Civil Servants, Targets Festive Relief

The Oyo State Government has commenced the distribution of subsidised food items to its workers as part of measures to cushion the impact of prevailing economic challenges and ensure a more comfortable December festive season.

The state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan, explaining that the initiative covers essential items such as bags of rice, vegetable oil, chicken and other food commodities.

According to Oyelade, the intervention is driven by the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State (ACCOS) and involves the sale of food items valued at ₦100 million to civil and public servants across the state at subsidised rates.

“The intervention aligns with the welfare-driven agenda of the Oyo State Government, aimed at improving the standard of living of workers and promoting food affordability,” the commissioner said.

He noted that the programme is strictly for state workers who have formally indicated interest, adding that beneficiaries will be properly collated through their respective ministries’ accounts sections to ensure transparency and accountability.

Oyelade explained that payment for the commodities would be made through salary deductions starting from February 2026, a structure designed to ease the financial burden on workers.

Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the security architecture of Oyo State to protect lives and property.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, made the pledge on Friday during the commissioning of the Moniya Area Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, reconstructed by Akinyele Local Government.

Makinde also commissioned two motorised boreholes located at the Rehabilitation Centre for the Physically Challenged in Isabiyi Ward 6 and Akuro Community, Olorisaoko, Ward 11.

He stated that the new Police Area Command in Moniya reflects the government’s proactive approach to tackling security challenges, particularly as Moniya and Akinyele Local Government continue to experience rapid urban expansion.

According to the governor, major infrastructure projects such as the Oyo Circular Road, Ilutuntun Business District and the proposed Dry Port are transforming the area into a hub of economic activity, making enhanced security measures imperative.

Makinde stressed that his administration remains committed to expanding security capacity to match the state’s growing population and economic development.
