Panic in Ilorin as aircraft crash-lands
Chaos erupted yesterday afternoon at Ilorin International Airport when a Diamond training aircraft operated by the Aviation Training School crash-landed during a high-risk training exercise.
The harrowing incident occurred around 4:00 pm on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the aviation community.
According to eyewitnesses and staff, the aircraft was performing a simulated instrument approach — a complex maneuver where pilots rely solely on their instruments to navigate, often under restricted visibility conditions using special goggles or IFR hoods.
The plane suddenly veered off Runway 05, skidding uncontrollably before coming to a frightening halt on the grass verge.
Two occupants were onboard, and while thankfully no fatalities were reported, both sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital amid frantic emergency response efforts.

At the time of reporting, the condition of the injured remains undisclosed, sparking anxiety and concern among families and aviation circles.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) quickly sprang into action, dispatching an elite Go-Team from Abuja to Ilorin to lead a full-scale investigation.
In a statement, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, revealed that investigators would meticulously comb the crash site, collect crucial evidence, interview witnesses, and analyze operational data to uncover what caused the dramatic mishap.
Captain Alex Badeh, NSIB’s Director General, expressed grave concern but also praised the swift medical response, emphasizing, “Every accident is a harsh reminder — and a vital opportunity — to bolster aviation safety. We are determined to leave no stone unturned in our quest for answers.”
Authorities have urged the public and media to refrain from speculation and await official updates, as the investigation promises to shed light on the true cause behind this alarming incident.
