PDP lawmakers threaten defection over woman leader nominee
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is once again grappling with internal strife as over 20 of its federal lawmakers have threatened to dump the party over an alleged plot to install a nominee backed by an All Progressives Congress (APC) governor as the PDP National Woman Leader.
In a joint statement signed by their spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the lawmakers accused the party leadership of issuing a nomination form to a candidate reportedly supported by Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
They warned that unless the nominee is disqualified before the screening exercise scheduled for Tuesday, they would be left with no option but to exit the party ahead of its national convention.

The lawmakers alleged that some influential figures within the PDP were working to “surrender the party’s key positions to individuals aligned with the APC,” a move they described as a betrayal of loyal party members.
They expressed concern that committed PDP members from the South East were being sidelined in favour of candidates with questionable allegiance, urging the party to uphold internal democracy and transparency.
“The PDP must not allow its structures to be hijacked by external interests. Only loyal and tested members should be allowed to vie for national positions,” the statement read.
The screening of candidates for national offices is expected to hold on Tuesday as part of preparations for the party’s national convention. The lawmakers said the outcome of the screening would determine their next line of action.
