Plateau govt shuts school over safety concerns
Plateau Government Shuts School Over Safety Concerns
The Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate closure of a private secondary school in Jos North Local Government Area over serious safety and structural concerns, reinforcing its stance on protecting students from avoidable risks.
The affected school was shut following an inspection by officials of the local government, which revealed visible cracks in key structural components, poor construction standards, and unsanitary conditions that posed a danger to both students and staff. Authorities warned that continued use of the facility could lead to building collapse or other life-threatening incidents.
According to the state government, the closure is a preventive safety measure, stressing that no school will be allowed to operate without meeting minimum building, health, and regulatory standards. The school management has been directed to halt academic activities and reapply for approval after addressing all identified defects and obtaining necessary clearances.

The development comes amid heightened concerns over school safety in Plateau State, following past incidents of building failures and growing insecurity in parts of the North-Central region. In recent months, the state government and the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB) have taken similar actions, including the temporary shutdown of some schools to protect learners from structural risks and security threats.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the decision, noting that the safety of children must take priority over academic schedules. However, some parents have called on the government to ensure that affected students are promptly relocated to safer, approved schools to minimise disruption to learning.
The Plateau government has reiterated that it will continue routine inspections of public and private schools, warning that institutions found violating safety regulations will face sanctions, including closure, until full compliance is achieved.
