Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang Defects to APC, Boosts Ruling Party’s Grip to 28 States

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the opposition party with only four governors.

The remaining PDP governors are Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa).

Mutfwang’s initial attempts to join the APC were reportedly blocked by party leaders in the North Central zone, including APC National Chairman Prof Nentawe Yiltwada, but he persisted, engaging in behind-the-scenes negotiations and political horse-trading with prominent APC figures in the region.

With his defection, the six states in the North Central zone are now firmly under APC control, consolidating the ruling party’s dominance in the region.

The PDP has lost seven governors to the APC from April 2025 to date. Earlier defectors include Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers). The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, was the only defector to the Accord Party.

Political analysts suggest that at least two of the remaining PDP governors may soon defect, as many first-time governors previously switched parties to secure re-election and preserve their political careers.

With Mutfwang’s move, the APC now controls 28 out of 36 states, further strengthening its dominance ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
