Tinubu Assures US, EU of State Police to Combat Nigeria’s Security Crisis

President Bola Tinubu has assured the United States and the European Union that a state police force will be established in Nigeria to address the growing security challenges across the country.

Tinubu made the revelation during the 14th All Progressives Congress (APC) National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, on Thursday, urging governors and party leaders to actively engage with communities at all levels, including local government areas.

“You must yield, continue to promote, tolerate and be flexible, and get involved in whatever is happening in your states, up to the local government level,” the president said.

He recounted a discussion with US and EU officials, stating that he confidently informed them about the party’s commitment to pass a state police bill to strengthen national security. “They asked me if I’m confident, and I said yes, I have a party to depend on. We will make it happen,” Tinubu added.

The president emphasized the need for reconciliation, accommodation, and flexibility within the party, noting that the recent Supreme Court judgment should guide actions toward enhancing governance.

Highlighting the importance of local government autonomy, Tinubu said, “There is no autonomy without a funded mandate. We will give them their money directly. That’s compliance with the Supreme Court. Take leadership seriously.”

Tinubu’s remarks underscore the administration’s commitment to strengthening local governance and deploying state-level security apparatus to curb rising insecurity in Nigeria.
