Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), confirming a major political realignment in the North-Central region ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The defection was confirmed on Friday by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, who shared the development on social media. The move comes weeks after Mutfwang formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing ongoing crises within the party.
During the induction, Mutfwang received his APC membership card, pledging continued commitment to inclusive governance and describing the switch as a decision made in the interest of Plateau residents. He called for unity among citizens as he embarks on his new political journey.

“This decision is based on faith, cooperation, and the desire to serve Plateau people effectively,” Mutfwang said. “I am confident that aligning with the APC will enable purposeful leadership and clarity of direction for our state.”
Political analysts say Mutfwang’s defection strengthens the APC’s dominance, particularly in the North-Central region, while highlighting the decline of the PDP following repeated defections by prominent governors. The move also signals strategic positioning for the upcoming 2027 elections.
Observers note that Mutfwang’s switch follows a broader pattern of opposition leaders moving to the ruling party to align with federal power and resources. While the development boosts APC’s numerical strength, some PDP members and civil society commentators have warned against excessive defections, cautioning that focus should remain on people-centered governance rather than party expansion.
