Police Arrest, Disarm Officers Seen in Viral Video Assaulting ABSU Student
Police officers captured in a viral video allegedly molesting a student of the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), have been arrested, disarmed, and detained for investigation by the Abia State Police Command. The action follows widespread public outrage after the footage circulated online.
The incident, which triggered the controversy, reportedly occurred on Saturday, May 9, when the student and other passengers were travelling in a commercial vehicle around Uturu in Abia State. The student, identified on social media as @BuddyJnrrr, alleged that the officers stopped their vehicle and began questioning passengers.
According to his account, the officers first ordered him to step down and then focused on another passenger before turning back to him over the number of mobile phones he was carrying. He said he explained that he was a student and that the phones were legally acquired, but the officers allegedly refused to listen.

The student further alleged that he, his brother, and another passenger were dragged into a nearby bush, where they were assaulted. He claimed that additional officers later joined in the incident and that they were beaten despite identifying themselves as students of ABSU. He also alleged that they sustained injuries and were threatened during the encounter.
Reacting to the viral video, the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the officers involved had been identified, disarmed, and detained pending investigation.
The Abia State Police Command also confirmed the development, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, has ordered a full investigation into the matter. The case has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiry and disciplinary action.
According to the police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the command will ensure that the outcome of the investigation is made public. She added that the police remain committed to professionalism and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
The command also warned that any form of misconduct or abuse of power by officers will not be tolerated, stressing that disciplinary measures will be enforced where necessary.
The incident has sparked renewed public debate on police conduct and accountability in Nigeria, with many citizens calling for stronger reforms and stricter enforcement of discipline within security agencies, especially in cases involving young people and students.

Soldier Shoots Hotel Security Chief in Keffi During Patrol Dispute
Soldier Shoots Hotel Security Chief in Keffi During Patrol Dispute
Troops attached to the 177 Guards Battalion operating under Operation MESA have confirmed a shooting incident involving a soldier and the Chief Security Officer of a popular hotel in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Security sources said the incident occurred during a night patrol when soldiers encountered a dispute involving the hotel security chief and a commercial motorcyclist.
According to reports attributed to security analyst Zagozola Makama, the hotel security chief—said to be a former soldier—had allegedly detained a commercial motorcyclist over a disagreement before the patrol team arrived at the scene. The soldiers were said to have intervened as part of their routine security duties in the area.
The situation reportedly escalated when one of the soldiers attempted to mediate in the dispute. Security sources claimed the hotel security chief allegedly slapped the soldier during the confrontation and also attempted to seize his rifle, which intensified the situation on the ground.

During the struggle that followed, the soldier allegedly discharged his weapon, shooting the hotel security chief. The injured officer was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, where he is currently receiving treatment, while his condition has not yet been officially disclosed.
Security authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances that led to the shooting. Officials are expected to determine whether the incident resulted from self-defence, a breach of operational procedure, or an escalation during intervention.
The military is yet to issue a detailed public statement on the incident, but internal review processes are believed to have been activated in line with standard disciplinary procedures.
The incident has also raised broader concerns about coordination and conduct during joint security patrols, especially in situations involving civilians and multiple security actors. Security analysts note that such confrontations can escalate quickly when communication or command structures break down.
Investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected once preliminary findings are concluded and authorities establish the full sequence of events.

Nigerians React as Tope Fasua Says UK Has Worse Phone Snatching Than Nigeria
Nigerians React as Tope Fasua Says UK Has Worse Phone Snatching Than Nigeria
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, has sparked widespread debate after claiming that Nigeria is now safer from phone snatching than some foreign countries, including the United Kingdom, despite ongoing public complaints about insecurity and economic hardship. He made the remarks during a members-only “Coffee Hangout” organised by the Kay Hikers Club in Abuja.
During the session, a female participant raised concerns over worsening economic conditions, particularly the rising cost of ride-hailing services and increasing cases of phone theft in Nigerian cities. She argued that many citizens are struggling to afford basic needs due to inflation and questioned the safety of commuters using transport services. She also warned that insecurity and hardship were becoming part of daily life for many Nigerians.
The participant further described how underpaid security personnel in residential areas reflect broader economic challenges, arguing that this situation exposes citizens to greater risk. She insisted that government statistics do not fully capture the reality on the ground, stressing that Nigerians are experiencing severe hardship and insecurity in their daily lives.

In response, Fasua argued that phone snatching is not unique to Nigeria, citing examples from countries such as the United Kingdom and Cameroon. He said similar incidents occur in London and other foreign cities, suggesting that Nigeria is often unfairly portrayed in a negative light. He maintained that the country has made progress in reducing street-level crimes such as phone theft.
Fasua insisted that phone snatching is no longer a major security issue in Nigeria, adding that his personal experience suggests improved safety in many areas. He urged Nigerians not to amplify negative narratives about the country, saying such perceptions do not reflect current realities.
Another participant at the event disagreed with his position, accusing him of downplaying the severity of Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. The participant argued that citizens are facing real and daily struggles that cannot be reduced to mindset or perception, stressing that inflation, insecurity, and unemployment remain widespread issues.
Despite the pushback, Fasua maintained that individuals also have a role to play in improving their circumstances, even amid economic challenges. He argued that personal financial discipline and adjustments are necessary for survival in the current economic environment, adding that everyone can make sacrifices to cope better with hardship.
The comments have since triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating whether the presidential aide was being realistic or disconnected from the lived experiences of ordinary citizens facing inflation, insecurity, and rising living costs.
