Police Arrest Two Suspects Over Gun Linked to Killing of Oghenemine Ogidi in Delta
The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly arrested two suspects, including an alleged Bayelsa State sender of a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition, in connection with the killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi by a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, in Effurun, Delta State. Security sources said the suspects were taken into custody and moved to the Effurun Area Command under the Delta State Police Command on Wednesday night as investigations intensify into the movement of the firearm and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Although police authorities have yet to issue an official statement, sources familiar with the investigation confirmed the arrests, describing them as a major breakthrough in the ongoing probe into the alleged illegal arms supply chain linked to the killing. The suspects are currently being interrogated as investigators work to establish how the firearm was obtained, transported, and eventually connected to the fatal incident.
According to a source who spoke to Vanguard, one of the arrested suspects is believed to be the individual who sent the firearm from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, to Effurun, Delta State, through a commercial transport system. The source alleged that the weapon was packaged and transported as a parcel before it surfaced in Effurun, where it became linked to the events that led to Oghenemine Ogidi’s death.

The source further explained that while the identities of the suspects are still being verified, one is strongly suspected to be the sender of the gun, while the second may be a driver involved in conveying the parcel from Bayelsa to Delta State. However, officials have not confirmed these details as investigations are still ongoing.
Oghenemine Ogidi, 28, was reportedly killed in Effurun during an encounter involving ASP Nuhu Usman and others. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over police brutality in Nigeria, as well as the circulation of illegal firearms. The killing has also triggered calls for a transparent investigation and accountability for all individuals involved.
Security sources say the arrested suspects are currently assisting investigators with information that could lead to additional arrests in what is believed to be a wider illegal firearms trafficking network operating across state lines. Police are also tracing the full movement of the weapon from Bayelsa State to Delta State, including all transport routes and individuals connected to its delivery.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and further arrests are possible as the probe expands. Meanwhile, civil society organisations and rights groups have continued to demand a transparent process, urging the police to ensure that all suspects, including any serving officers linked to the incident, are properly investigated and prosecuted where necessary.
