Police Launch Manhunt After Bandits Kill Five in Kwande LGA, Benue

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that bandits killed five persons, including a police officer, during a violent attack on Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

The confirmation was made by the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, in a statement issued on Wednesday in Makurdi. According to him, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Jato-Aka Division, received a distress report on February 3 that suspected armed bandits had launched an attack on police personnel stationed in Abande community, as well as residents of the area.

DSP Udeme explained that the attackers invaded the community, opening fire and causing panic among locals. During the attack, a serving police officer was killed, while four civilians also lost their lives. Several others were reportedly injured, and residents fled their homes to escape the violence.

He said that upon receiving the information, police reinforcement teams were immediately mobilised and deployed to the affected area. The operatives engaged the attackers and worked to restore calm in the community.

The police spokesperson noted that normalcy has since been restored, while security patrols and tactical operations have been intensified across the area and neighbouring communities to prevent further attacks. He added that a manhunt is ongoing to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

DSP Udeme condemned the attack, describing it as criminal and unacceptable, and assured residents that the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property. He urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful and timely information that could aid ongoing operations.

The incident adds to rising concerns over banditry and armed attacks in Benue State, with communities repeatedly calling for stronger security measures to address persistent threats.
