A member of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ite group, Shuaibu Dass, has been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command for attempting to bribe officers with N1.5 million.

The bribe was reportedly offered to secure the release of Abdul Kareem Ahmed, a prominent financier and strong member of the group.

This development was announced by the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Bennett Igweh, during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters.

He revealed that Dass approached officers on September 5, 2024, in an attempt to pay for Ahmed’s release. Ahmed had been arrested earlier by the State Intelligence Department in connection with the murder of two police officers.

CP Igweh explained that Ahmed was apprehended on August 25, 2024, during an operation led by ACP Mohammed Baba.

He is accused of being involved in an attack that resulted in the deaths of two police officers and injuries to three others at Wuse Market Junction.

The attack, carried out by members of the proscribed Shi’ite group, also led to the vandalization of three police patrol vehicles.

Speaking on the arrest, CP Igweh said, “On September 5, one Alhaji Shuaibu Dass of Durumi 1, a known member of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (Shiite Sect), approached operatives of the FCT Police Command, offering them the sum of N1,500,000 in an attempt to secure the release of one Abdul Kareem Ahmed, a financier and strong member of the Shiite Sect who was arrested in connection with the murder of two police officers.”

The Commissioner confirmed that both suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing interrogation. Following the completion of the investigation, they will face charges in court.

It was also noted that 97 other members of the Shi’ite group had been arrested in connection with the same attack on August 25, 2024.

The police had previously accused the group of launching an unprovoked attack on their officers, leading to the fatalities and property damage.
