The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a police officer and three civilians in Aondona village, Gwer West Local Government Area, following an attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, told journalists on Monday that the slain officer died while defending residents during the onslaught.

His words: “The police responded when the case of Aondona was reported. Three bodies were recovered, and investigation is ongoing,.

“Note also that a police officer died defending one of the villages just a few hours before this incident in Gwer West Local Government.”

However, local sources and fleeing residents report a far more devastating toll.

According to them, more than 30 people were killed, with seven injured and two others abducted during coordinated attacks across four communities: Aondona, Ahume, Tyolaha, and Orbiam.

One source from Aondona said the violence began Saturday evening and escalated through Monday, affecting neighbouring settlements.

“Over 15 persons were killed in Aondona, seven in Ahume, five in Tyolaha, and six in Orbiam. Two villagers were also taken by the attackers,” the source said.

The increasing frequency of such attacks has forced residents to abandon their homes, particularly in Mablim, a Gwer East community bordering Aondona, where many have fled to Taraku town for safety.

The police say investigations are ongoing, but tension remains high in the affected areas.
