“Polygamy Wasn’t My Choice” — El-Rufai’s Wife Sparks National Debate

“Polygamy Wasn’t My Choice” — El-Rufai’s Wife Sparks National Debate

Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that entering a polygamous marriage was not her personal choice, a disclosure that has reignited national conversations around marriage, women’s agency, culture, and religion in Nigeria.

Speaking during an online discussion that trailed a viral announcement by a lawyer who took a second wife, Hadiza El-Rufai said she was raised with the expectation of a monogamous marriage, noting that polygamy was not what she envisioned for herself. However, she explained that circumstances and faith shaped her eventual acceptance of the marriage structure.

Despite her initial reservations, El-Rufai’s wife said she found ways to adapt, pointing out that polygamy offered her more personal time and shared domestic responsibilities. She added, however, that she remains unconvinced about the overall benefits of polygamy for men, stressing that it comes with enormous emotional, financial, and moral responsibilities.

Her remarks have triggered widespread reactions across Nigeria, particularly in the North where polygamy is legally recognised under Islamic law. While some social media users praised her honesty and courage, others argued that polygamy remains a religious and cultural institution that should not be publicly questioned.

The comments come amid broader conversations on family values and social responsibility, with traditional rulers like the Emir of Zazzau recently urging men to marry only one wife if they lack the financial capacity to care for multiple families adequately.

Meanwhile, the discussion around the El-Rufai family continues to intersect with Kaduna politics. The former governor remains a prominent public figure as debates persist over his legacy, including Kaduna State’s debt profile and governance style under his successor, Governor Uba Sani, who has recently unveiled major infrastructure plans for the state.

El-Rufai’s wife’s statement adds a human and personal dimension to the ongoing national discourse on polygamy in Nigeria, highlighting the often-unheard perspectives of women navigating cultural expectations and personal aspirations within marriage.
