Borno flood: Seyi Tinubu announces massive donations, sends in medical team

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has dispatched a team of 50 medical personnel to offer critical medical services to those impacted by the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Newstrends reports that Maiduguri was submerged by floods on September 10, following the collapse of spillways at the Alau Dam.

The resulting devastation affected homes, farmlands, and roadways, displacing thousands of residents in the city.

During a visit to Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri on Friday, Seyi Tinubu revealed that the medical team, comprising professionals from across the North-East, had already been deployed to assist local healthcare workers overwhelmed by the crisis.

“They are already on ground, and they will remain with you for the next few days to help stabilize the situation,” he stated.

In partnership with the Noella Foundation, Seyi said his team would also provide medical supplies, food, and essential items to support approximately 50,000 children and adults affected by the disaster.

The donations include 500 bags of 25kg rice, 1,000 cartons of spaghetti, among other items.

“This is just the beginning, Your Excellency. I want to assure you that more help is on its way,” Seyi said, emphasizing that efforts are underway to mobilize additional resources to assist displaced individuals until they are able to rebuild their lives.

The gesture, he noted, was in response to President Tinubu’s call for support for flood victims.

He also praised the resilience of the people of Borno and the leadership shown by Governor Zulum in confronting the challenges posed by the disaster.

In response, Governor Zulum expressed deep appreciation for the support extended by Seyi Tinubu and his team, assuring that the aid would be used effectively to benefit those in need. He also commended President Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu for their continuous support.

“We remain grateful to the President and First Lady for their show of concern and support. Tell the President that the people of Borno highly appreciate him and are 100 per cent with him,” Zulum said.

Nigerian Army announces date for Short Service Combatant Course selection

The Nigerian Army has announced the commencement of the selection board process for its Short Service Combatant Course 48/2025, scheduled to begin on October 14, 2024.

According to the Army, the exercise will take place at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Old Site, located in Kaduna State.

The announcement was shared on the official X handle of the Nigerian Army on Saturday.

According to the statement, all shortlisted candidates are required to report between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on October 14, 2024.

It also emphasized that candidates arriving after 11:00 AM will not be allowed to participate.

INEC extends voting time in Edo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of voting hours in areas of Edo State where the process started late.

According to reports, logistical challenges and rainfall delayed the commencement of voting in several parts of the state.

INEC officials and materials arrived late at Ward 1, Unit 3 in Ewohimi, Esan North Local Government Area, where Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, eventually cast his vote.

Ighodalo, who arrived at the polling unit at 10:30 a.m., expressed disappointment over the delay. “As you can see, INEC officials and materials just arrived, and they are well over two hours late,” he said.

He added, “Well, we are still within the allocated time for voting; let us see what we can achieve between now and the close of voting hours.”

Ighodalo also called for fairness, stating that voting hours should be extended by the amount of time lost.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Mohammed Haruna, a National Commissioner for INEC, confirmed that voting time had been extended in the affected areas.

“The Commission continues to monitor the ongoing governorship election in Edo State from our situation room at the National Headquarters in Abuja,” Haruna said. “Our monitoring shows that while voting commenced early in many polling units, there were reports of late starts in some areas.”

“To ensure no voter is disenfranchised, we reiterate that in line with our regulations and guidelines, voting will be extended wherever it commenced late and will continue until the last person in the queue, who arrived by 2:30 p.m., has voted.”

He also noted that INEC had instructed its office in Edo State to ensure adequate power supply in the affected polling units or ward collation centres through the use of back-up electric generators.
