Rabiu Stands by $500,000 Pledge Despite Super Eagles’ AFCON Exit

The Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has lauded the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their spirited performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), reaffirming that his $500,000 reward pledge remains intact despite the team’s semi-final defeat.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles bowed out of the continental tournament on Wednesday after a tense semi-final encounter against host nation Morocco, losing 4–2 on penalties following a hard-fought draw at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.

In a message shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Rabiu praised the players’ courage, unity and determination, describing their display as one that brought pride to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage on the pitch. Every Nigerian is proud of you,” Rabiu wrote.

He acknowledged that football results do not always reflect the level of effort expended, stressing that the team’s fighting spirit and passion resonated deeply with fans across the country.

“Sometimes our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we desire, but the spirit and unity you displayed truly matter,” he added.

Rabiu confirmed he would proceed with the $500,000 pledge, noting that it was in recognition of the team’s hard work, dedication and the joy they brought to the nation during the tournament.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the BUA Chairman had initially announced the incentive after Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarter-final.

Encouraging the players to remain focused, Rabiu expressed optimism that lessons from the competition would inspire future success for the national team.

“Keep your heads high. This experience will fuel greater victories. Nigeria believes in you,” he said.
