Ramadan: Sultan confirms sighting of moon, commences of fast

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, III has declared Saturday, April 2, 2022 as the first day of 1443 Lunar calendar Ramadan.

The Ramadan crescent moon, Sultan said Friday  night was sighted in multiple locations in Nigeria Friday evening, prompting announcement of the commencement of Ramadan fasting tomorrow .

In a live broadcast on Friday evening, the Sultan said having sighted the moon, the fasting would commence Saturday in accordance with the Sharia.

He noted according to reports he received, the new moon has been sighted in Sokoto, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, and Plateau States.

Ramadan is the ninth lunar month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide. It is a month for fasting by every matured Muslim; also for prayer, reflection, and charity.

The fasting rite, which is observed from dawn to dusk daily, is expected to last for 29 days or 30 days.
