Reggae legend, Jimmy Cliff, loses battle with pneumonia, dies at 81
Jimmy Cliff, the Jamaican music icon whose soaring vocals and socially conscious lyrics helped catapult reggae onto the global stage, has died at the age of 81.
His wife, Latifa Chambers, announced his passing on Monday in an emotional Instagram post, confirming that the celebrated singer succumbed to complications from a seizure linked to pneumonia, a lung infection he had been battling.
Cliff, revered for classics such as “Many Rivers to Cross,” “The Harder They Come,” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” was one of the most influential pioneers of reggae music, shaping the genre’s international rise through his artistry, activism, and magnetic stage presence.
In her tribute, Chambers thanked the veteran musician’s friends, fans, and medical team, noting that their support had long been a pillar of strength for Cliff and had offered comfort to her and their children during what she described as a “difficult process.”
Global tributes have begun pouring in for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, whose six-decade career left an indelible mark on music, culture, and generations of artists around the world.
