Residence Permit: Spain to Grant Legal Status to Undocumented Nigerian Migrants, Others
The Spanish government has announced a landmark immigration reform that will allow hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants, including a significant number of Nigerian migrants, to obtain legal residency and work permits in Spain.
Under the new policy, migrants currently living in Spain without valid documentation will be eligible to apply for temporary residence permits, provided they meet specific conditions set by the authorities. The move forms part of Spain’s broader effort to address labour shortages, improve migrant integration, and bring undocumented workers into the formal economy.
According to Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, the regularisation programme will apply to migrants who arrived in the country before the end of 2025 and have lived continuously in Spain for a minimum qualifying period. Applicants must also have no criminal record and comply with application guidelines once the registration window opens.

Successful applicants will be granted a one-year renewable residence permit, alongside a work authorisation that allows them to work legally across various sectors of the Spanish economy. The policy also covers family members, including children residing with eligible migrants.
Officials estimate that about 500,000 undocumented migrants could benefit from the initiative, many of whom are from Africa and Latin America, with Nigerians ranking among the largest African migrant communities in Spain. The government says the reform will reduce labour exploitation, strengthen tax contributions, and support key industries such as agriculture, construction, tourism, and caregiving.
While migrant rights organisations have welcomed the move as a humane and pragmatic solution, opposition parties have raised concerns about its potential political and social impact. Despite the criticism, the Spanish government insists the policy is necessary to reflect demographic realities and economic needs.
Applications are expected to open later in 2026, with authorities urging eligible migrants to prepare required documentation ahead of the process.
