Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Gov Fubara, Urges Assembly to Halt Process
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has strongly rejected the ongoing move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that the process could destabilise the state and damage the image of the ruling party.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Rivers State APC Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party said it had taken note of the “unfortunate developments” emanating from the Rivers State House of Assembly, while acknowledging the legislature’s constitutional role as an independent arm of government.
The APC, however, insisted that resorting to impeachment was unacceptable, describing the development as a spillover of unresolved internal crises from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which it said should not be allowed to infiltrate the APC-led government in the state.
“Our position as at today is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement read.

Addressing claims that the impeachment threat is linked to budgetary issues, the party recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a ₦1.485 trillion budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President and Commander-in-Chief in May 2025. The budget, it noted, was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, and is valid until August 2026.
According to the APC, the governor is under no obligation to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the existing one, adding that the 1999 Constitution also permits a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year by a state governor.
The party warned lawmakers, particularly APC members in the Rivers State House of Assembly, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the administration of Governor Fubara.
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilised through fratricidal disagreements,” the statement added.
The APC called for the immediate discontinuation of the impeachment process, cautioning that it could undermine democratic governance and stall development in the state.
“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” Nwauju concluded.
