Rivers crisis deepens as pro-Wike lawmakers declare seats of Fubara loyalists vacant
Four Rivers State House of Assembly lawmakers loyal to governor Siminalayi Fubara have lost their seats.
The seats of the lawmakers, which include Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to Fubara, were declared vacant by the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly.
At the declaration on Tuesday during plenary, Amaewhule cited the absence of the four lawmakers from sittings for 152 days for his decision.
Amaewhule also explained that Ehie did not officially write to inform the House of his new office, and as such his seat has been declared vacant.

Regarding Victor Oko-Jumbo and the two others, the House held three separate votes to declare their seats vacant for absenteeism from sitting for 152 days consecutively without notification or permission, in violation of the 1999 Constitution.
The House further resolved to write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct elections to replace the now vacant seats within 90 days to provide representation for their people.
Also, the Assembly agreed to give Fubara another opportunity to present the 2024 Appropriations Bill following the Appeal Court’s nullification of the N800 billion budget which he had presented to a parallel House led by Edison Ehie

The Federal Government on Tuesday stated that the petition by Mr Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as “Sunday Igboho” calling for the UK to consider the ‘Yoruba Nation’ Agitation was not endorsed by the UK government.
Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made this known in a statement in Abuja.
“Following media reports on the petition submitted at No. 10 Downing Street by Mr Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho, the British High Commissioner in Abuja was invited to shed light on the issue.

“During the meeting, the High Commissioner noted with concern that the matter was overblown, indicating that the media reports were highly misleading.
“Furthermore, the High Commissioner informed that he was aware of the letter being delivered but added that it was merely an established practice of allowing the delivery of letters and petitions to No 10.
“It was not endorsed by any agency of the UK government nor the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee.
“The UK government typically does not concern itself with petitions concerning the sovereign affairs of another country,” Abu-Obe said.
He quoted the high commissioner to have informed that such petitions had been rejected by the UK Parliamentary Petitions Committee and the UK Government in the past.
He further agreed to continue liaising with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as needed, while reiterating the importance of the bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

Nigeria to introduce e-gate technology for border control
Nigeria to introduce e-gate technology for border control
Nigeria’s Federal Government has unveiled plans to introduce e-gate technology in a bid to streamline the country’s immigration process, as part of wider efforts to modernise its border management system.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement shared via his official Facebook page. The minister had earlier overseen a presentation on a new integrated border management system designed for the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The system aims to boost national security while ensuring the smooth flow of legitimate travellers across the country’s borders. Central to this modernisation effort is the e-gate technology, which automates border control processes, reducing wait times and easing the movement of travellers.

He emphasised that the government’s embrace of technology and collaboration is designed to create a more secure, efficient, and traveller-friendly environment, contributing to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
“Our vision is to establish a modern, effective, and efficient immigration service, confidently manned by well-trained and motivated personnel,” he added.
The minister also assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to addressing emerging challenges in border management, with national security as a top priority.
