The Kano Emirate Council has firmly dismissed as false a viral social media video alleging that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II obtained a carry-over in one of his law courses at Northwest University, Kano. The video, which circulated widely on Sunday, purportedly suggested that the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor had failed to meet the academic requirements for one of his courses, sparking widespread discussion across various online platforms.
Emir Sanusi is currently enrolled as a 200-level undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Common Law and Sharia at the university, pursuing his law degree while carrying out his royal duties. The monarch, who holds advanced degrees including a PhD, had previously described his decision to enrol for a Law degree as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to study a discipline he considers central to building a stable and just society. “I have always said that the classroom is my default. I am happiest when I am studying or teaching,” he had said in an earlier interview, adding that law “governs our families, our contracts, our property, succession and even how we drive on the road.”
Muhammad Ado, Secretary in the Office of the Emir, described the claim as untrue, insisting that the Emir remained on course to graduate with a first-class degree. According to him, the Emirate Council’s records showed that Sanusi needed only one additional point to attain a first-class grade. “We attended a programme organised by Law Students in the university on Saturday, and a student took the video. But it’s not true. In our calculations, it remains only one point for the Emir to attain first class. Sunday Dare was a visiting lecturer at the programme,” Ado stated.

A student of the university, Ibrahim Abubakar-Danmasani, also dismissed the claim, saying that examinations at the institution had not commenced as of Sunday and were expected to begin on Monday. This timeline directly contradicts the viral narrative that the Emir had already failed a course. Sources within the university corroborated the Emirate Council’s position, stating that the viral video did not reflect the true academic situation of the Emir. The sources attributed the video to some youths who allegedly recorded and circulated it as a prank, describing the act as mischief aimed at generating unnecessary controversy.
The Kano Emirate Council has therefore maintained that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II remains on track to achieve his ambition of graduating with a first-class law degree. The monarch, who balances his royal duties with academic commitments, had previously shared how he manages both responsibilities. “I am a student in the morning and an Emir in the afternoon. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are for classes, while Mondays and Fridays I sit at normal hours. When I cannot attend physically, I join virtually. The university has been flexible enough to accommodate my schedule,” he had explained. This would be his third bachelor’s degree, having previously studied Economics at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before obtaining a Master’s degree and a PhD in Economics from the same institution.
The development has drawn reactions from various quarters, with many social media users expressing relief that the rumour was unfounded. Supporters of the Emir have praised his commitment to education despite his demanding royal responsibilities, describing him as a role model for young Nigerians. The Emir’s academic journey has been closely followed by many, given his illustrious career as a banker, economist, and traditional ruler.
Efforts to reach the university management for an official reaction were not immediately successful as of filing time, although sources within the institution have privately confirmed the Emirate Council’s position. The Northwest University, Kano, has not issued an official statement regarding the viral video, but insiders suggest that the institution is aware of the situation and supports the Emir in his academic pursuits.
As the story continues to develop, the Kano Emirate Council has urged the public to disregard the viral video and avoid spreading unverified information. The Council emphasized that Emir Sanusi remains dedicated to his studies and continues to excel academically, with his sights set on achieving a first-class degree in Law.
