Senate to Screen General Christopher Musa as Nigeria’s New Defence Minister

The Nigerian Senate has announced that General Christopher Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, will be screened on Wednesday as the new Minister of Defence, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle the country’s security challenges.

The announcement was made by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele in a statement issued by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs on Tuesday. Bamidele highlighted the crucial role of the screening in maintaining domestic peace and national stability.

Musa’s nomination follows the exit of former Minister of Defence Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down citing health reasons. President Bola Tinubu formally forwarded Musa’s name to the Senate for confirmation, sending a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Bamidele stated that the letter will be read on the Senate floor on Wednesday, after which the screening will commence in line with Section 147 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended). He emphasized that the process is urgent given the current state of emergency on national security declared by President Tinubu.

“The screening of the defence minister nominee is a vital step to demonstrate synergy between the Presidency and the National Assembly in the national interest,” Bamidele said. He added that the approval of Musa is central to sustaining government campaigns against bandits, extremists, terrorists, and other threats to Nigeria’s security.

The move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening leadership in the Ministry of Defence as the country continues to confront escalating security threats.
