Seun Kuti regains freedom after eight days in detention

Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti was on Tuesday released after spending eight days in police detention.
He was reportedly released to his family after meeting his bail conditions.
Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, the singer’s counsel, confirmed he was released around 7.30pm.
The lawyer also said Seun would return to the magistrates’ court in Yaba on Wednesday for the trial which was adjourned today.
The purpose of that proceeding, according to Adeyinka, is to receive the director of public prosecution (DPP)’s advice on the case.
Seun, the youngest son of Fela Kuti, the late Afrobeat legend, was arrested and detained on April 15 after he was seen in a viral video assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.
He was detained at the state criminal investigation Department (SCID) and arraigned before the magistrates’ court on April 16.
The police had sought to get an order to further keep him in custody for 21 days pending the conclusion of its investigation.

But Adeola Olatubosun, the chief magistrate of the court, directed the police to detain the musician for additional 48 hours and then release him on bail.

On Thursday, Olatubuson extended Seun’s remand for additional four days to enable the police to continue with its investigation.
She also ordered that Seun’s file be duplicated and sent to the DPP and subsequently adjourned the trial till May 22.
The trial was thereafter shifted to Tuesday, May 23.
The trial was, however, stalled today due to the absence of the chief magistrate.

Anambra govt arrests 2 fake doctors, shut down hospitals

The Anambra state government has arrested two fake medical doctors and sealed off their health facilities at Alor in Idemili South Local Government Area and Adazi-Enu in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.

Dr Afam Obidike, the state’s commissioner for health, accompanied by some security operatives and members of the Anambra Joint Enforcement Team (ANJET), raided the areas on Friday night and arrested the suspects.

Speaking to newsmen on Saturday, the commissioner identified the suspects as Anayo Okwara, owner of Bright Land Hospital and Maternity Ltd in Alor and Igwe Ogbonna, owner of Favour of God Hospital and Maternity, Adazi-Enu.

He said that the suspects were operating the hospitals illegally in the state.

“Following investigation, it was discovered that Ogbonna is not even a medical doctor and does not have any medical knowledge.

“He also used his hospital as a nursing school, where students pay as much as N70,000 to N100,000 to study nursing. Some of the student nurses we met at the facility confirmed this.

“On Okwara, the second suspect, the president-general of Alor community, Chief Emmanuel Ojukwu, wrote to the ministry complaining about incessant deaths recorded at Bright Land Hospital.

“Okwara, first claimed that he was a homeopathic doctor, but later admitted that his medical certificates and license were forged when he was being questioned,” he said.

Mr Obidike said that five illegal health facilities had been shut down so far, saying that Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration would not relent in its effort to flush out fake doctors operating across the state.

He said that the objective of the exercise was not to witch-hunt anyone but to ensure standards both in government and private hospitals in the state.

“It is unfortunate that death is an irreversible course and I do not understand why people who are not medical practitioners will continue to waste people’s lives because of greed and quest to make money through illegal means.

“We are sending out this warning to those operating illegally and parading themselves as medical doctors to close down their hospitals or face the full wrath of the law.

“Anambra is not a place for quacks to practice,” he said.

The commissioner thanked the community leaders and vigilante groups for the tip-off and urged residents to be vigilant and report such illegality in their areas.

He commended Mr Soludo for giving them the necessary support to execute the raid.

Mr Obidike said that the suspects would be charged to court.

Invasion of radio station in Ibadan: 4 suspected ‘Yoruba Nation’ agitators arrested

Combined security operatives have apprehended suspected Yoruba nation agitators over the invasion of Amuludun FM, a community-based radio station owned by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in Ibadan.

The suspected Yoruba nation agitators, according to an eyewithness account, stormed premises of the radio station in the early hours of Sunday as they were reported to be armed with charms, while a live sponsored programme was ongoing.

The combined security operatives, which include the men of the Operation Burst, Directorate of State Security (DSS), Police and others, swung into action and made some arrests.

A member of staff of the station informed our correspondent that the suspects invaded the station with various forms of charms, saying: “That is what we witnessed this morning. They hijacked the station around 6 am. But they had been at the station before that time”

“They came with various forms of charms. They woke our staff, who were sleeping. Some of our staff have fled.”

“We are yet to see some of our staff. But the security (personnel) are on ground now.”

“Among their claims included “Oodua Nation has come to stay,” “Yoruba no more under Federal Republic of Nigeria” “United Nation will soon declare Oodua Nation.”

Vanguard learnt the alleged Yoruba nation agitators broadcast for about an hour before the arrival of combined teams of the police, operation burst and Nigerian Army.

Meanwhile, the security teams were able to recover the station after five persons were arrested and taken to the Eleyele Police Headquarters for interrogation.

Earlier, the General Manager of the station, Mr. Stephen Agbaje, who confirmed the development to Vanguard in a telephone call, stressed that the situation has been brought under control by the security agencies, adding that some arrests have been made.

“Some group of agitators came around in the night and took over the station, but the situation has been brought under control by the security agents.”

“They were able to recover the station, and some arrests have been made,” he said.

As of the time of filling this report, normalcy has returned to the station with the presence of DSS, Police and other security operatives.

BREAKING: Irate youths shut Radio Nigeria, Amuludun FM in Ibadan

Angry youths, on Sunday morning, shut down Radio Nigeria, Amuludun FM 99.1 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

A source told The PUNCH Metro that the youths besieged the station and wanted to take over the running of the programme.

An investigation by our correspondent revealed that the stern-looking security operatives have demobilised and chased them out of the station.

The radio station, which was located at J&P Bus-stop, Moniya in Ibadan, Akinyele Local Government Area of the state, was established on October 10, 2007, and commenced transmission in pure and undiluted Yoruba language on October 22, the same year.
