Tragedy has struck in Runjin Barmo, a village in Kajiji District of Shagari Local Government Area, Sokoto State, where seven members of the same family have reportedly died after consuming a contaminated cassava dish.

This information was shared in a statement issued by the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, which was signed by the ministry’s Information Officer, Nura Bello, on behalf of the State Commissioner for Health.

The statement recounted the account given by the village head, Malam Modi, to the Commissioner for Health,  Asabe Balarabe, who visited the affected community.

According to Malam Modi, the family members, including the father, Malam Abubakar, his wife A’ishatu Abubakar, and their five children, fell ill after eating the cassava-based meal during dinner.

“The incident occurred last Wednesday, and the exact cause of the deaths has not yet been confirmed,” Malam Modi stated. He further noted that the same batch of cassava was also consumed by residents of four other households in the village, none of whom reported any health issues.

The village head expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for his concern and support during this difficult time.

During her visit, Commissioner Balarabe informed the villagers that the Ministry of Health would conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the deaths. She assured the community that samples would be taken from a teenage survivor of the meal to assist in the investigation. On behalf of the governor, she also offered condolences to the grieving family and prayed for the departed souls.

Commissioner Balarabe urged residents to promptly report any unusual illnesses in their communities to enable timely intervention by health authorities.
