Shelve Proposed BRT Fare Hike, Lagos PDP Tells Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted the proposed increase in the fare for BRT buses in the state, and called on the state government to shelve the proposal in order not to worsen the plight of the people.

Daily Trust on Sunday reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved the proposed fare hike on the BRT buses, which would see the passengers paying an additional N100 on all trips within the state with effect from July 13.

As a result of this hike, a trip from Ikorodu to TBS will now cost N600 instead of N500; Berger to Ajah will now increase to N700 from N600.

The state government had blamed the increase on hike in the pump price of diesel from N187 to N830 and the unavailability of spare parts for the increase.

But the PDP, through its publicity secretary, Hakeem Amode, however, faulted the increase, saying the current situation with diesel was inflicted on the country by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

According to Amode, the government has shown lack of compassion and total disregard for the plight of the citizens of the state considering the “crippling economic situation.”

Armed invaders have reportedly killed at least 28 individuals, including six Benue State Community Volunteer Guards (BSCVG) personnel, in the Gyaruwa axis of Gwer West Local Government Area, Benue State.

According to locals, the attack took place between Saturday and Monday, and villagers were forced to flee their homes in the Tse-Kperyisa, Tse-Adaa, and Tse-Shiver towns.

They revealed that six security personnel were slain while taking some mourners to bury their deceased on Saturday, and that by Sunday night, the terrorists had killed 16 persons, with another six killed along Adoka-Naka Road in Gwer West LGA.

The villagers listed names of those killed in Tse-Kperyisa as: Atayugh Aondona, Atayugh Monday, Atayugh Friday, Atibee Kperyisa, Atibee Catherine, Anande Tete, Atsaga Ayange, Atsaga John Yeye, Oraduen Aondosoo and Ordem Msuega.

Others killed in Tse-Adaa include: Msanhe Orgbo, Ayageor Ankina while in Tse-Shiver, Gor Kyor and Ormba Gbem were among those killed on Sunday night. It was learnt that two other victims were rescued, but later died in a hospital.

The villagers said the slain bodies had been buried including that of one Atayugh Aondona who was beheaded and his head taken away by his assailants.

Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Henry Agba, told journalists in Makurdi that the attack started on Saturday with the killing of six security personnel of Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards.

Agba said, “They escorted some families to go and bury their loved ones and on their way back, they were ambushed and six of them were killed. Then on Sunday night around 11pm, they attacked a community in Gyaruwa and 14 were killed instantly.

“On Monday, they attacked another village on Naka-Adoka road and killed people. Six dead bodies have already been recovered. So many people were injured and are in different hospitals in the LGA.

“The Sunday attack happened at 12 midnight while that of yesterday (Monday) was during the morning rainfall. Militia herders carried out the attack.”

Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor on External Security. Col. Alexander Anshungu (rtd.), confirmed 16 people were killed in the Gyaruwa vicinity where he visited for on-the-spot assessment of the Sunday attack.

Anshungu added that the attackers used machetes in killing their victims in a most gruesome manner, adding that the Gyaruwa community had been deserted.

Officials of the Volunteer Guards were however yet to react to the killing of their personnel at the time of filing this report as its Public Relations Officer promised to revert with details.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benúe Command, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed to journalists that she received the report of 10 deaths from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the affected area.

Troops kill ISWAP Commanders, 30 other terrorists

Troops of the Nigerian military attached to Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast have neutralised more terrorists’ commanders and over 30 members wreaking havocs on innocent citizens in the Lake Chad region of Borno State.

It was learnt that the air component of the operation rained airstrikes on the adversaries following the terrorists’ refusal to surrender their weapon and ammunition to the military after a series of appeal by the authority and community leaders.

No fewer than 50 tough and hardened terrorists’ commanders have been taken out by the military across all the theatres of operations, particularly in the Northwest and Northeast in the last one year.

The military high command last month declared high-profiled terrorists’ commanders including Simon Ekpa, the notorious leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, wanted over their nefarious activities.

Daily Trust reports that the senior terrorists’ commanders, who were killed during the operation that was carried out on Saturday, included Ali Dawud, Bakura Fallujah and Mallam Ari.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, Edward Gabkwet, who confirmed this to journalists in Abuja, explained that terrorists’ numerous vehicles, motorcycles and logistical assets were destroyed.

Gabkwet, an Air Vice Marshal, said the air troops executed a precision airstrike on the hideouts of ISWAP terrorists nestled within Kolleram village along the shores of Lake Chad.

According to him, the operation yielded significant success as the Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) post-strike conducted revealed the neutralisation of over 30 terrorists apart from the commanders that were taken out.

“Intelligence gathered after the airstrike further indicated that the aerial bombardment effectively obliterated a key facility within the Kolleram enclave, which served as a hub for the terrorists’ food processing activities, including grinding machines.

“The success of these airstrikes underscores NAF’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety and security of Nigerian citizens. By neutralising key terrorist figures and destroying their logistical infrastructure, the operation has significantly degraded the capabilities of the ISWAP group in the region.

“These airstrikes complement the ongoing efforts of ground forces in the Lake Chad flank and represent a crucial step forward in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria,” the senior military officer told newsmen.
