Soldier Shoots Hotel Security Chief in Keffi During Patrol Dispute

Troops attached to the 177 Guards Battalion operating under Operation MESA have confirmed a shooting incident involving a soldier and the Chief Security Officer of a popular hotel in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Security sources said the incident occurred during a night patrol when soldiers encountered a dispute involving the hotel security chief and a commercial motorcyclist.

According to reports attributed to security analyst Zagozola Makama, the hotel security chief—said to be a former soldier—had allegedly detained a commercial motorcyclist over a disagreement before the patrol team arrived at the scene. The soldiers were said to have intervened as part of their routine security duties in the area.

The situation reportedly escalated when one of the soldiers attempted to mediate in the dispute. Security sources claimed the hotel security chief allegedly slapped the soldier during the confrontation and also attempted to seize his rifle, which intensified the situation on the ground.

During the struggle that followed, the soldier allegedly discharged his weapon, shooting the hotel security chief. The injured officer was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, where he is currently receiving treatment, while his condition has not yet been officially disclosed.

Security authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances that led to the shooting. Officials are expected to determine whether the incident resulted from self-defence, a breach of operational procedure, or an escalation during intervention.

The military is yet to issue a detailed public statement on the incident, but internal review processes are believed to have been activated in line with standard disciplinary procedures.

The incident has also raised broader concerns about coordination and conduct during joint security patrols, especially in situations involving civilians and multiple security actors. Security analysts note that such confrontations can escalate quickly when communication or command structures break down.

Investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected once preliminary findings are concluded and authorities establish the full sequence of events.
