Police Arrest, Disarm Officers Seen in Viral Video Assaulting ABSU Student

Police officers captured in a viral video allegedly molesting a student of the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), have been arrested, disarmed, and detained for investigation by the Abia State Police Command. The action follows widespread public outrage after the footage circulated online.

The incident, which triggered the controversy, reportedly occurred on Saturday, May 9, when the student and other passengers were travelling in a commercial vehicle around Uturu in Abia State. The student, identified on social media as @BuddyJnrrr, alleged that the officers stopped their vehicle and began questioning passengers.

According to his account, the officers first ordered him to step down and then focused on another passenger before turning back to him over the number of mobile phones he was carrying. He said he explained that he was a student and that the phones were legally acquired, but the officers allegedly refused to listen.

The student further alleged that he, his brother, and another passenger were dragged into a nearby bush, where they were assaulted. He claimed that additional officers later joined in the incident and that they were beaten despite identifying themselves as students of ABSU. He also alleged that they sustained injuries and were threatened during the encounter.

Reacting to the viral video, the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the officers involved had been identified, disarmed, and detained pending investigation.

The Abia State Police Command also confirmed the development, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, has ordered a full investigation into the matter. The case has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiry and disciplinary action.

According to the police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the command will ensure that the outcome of the investigation is made public. She added that the police remain committed to professionalism and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

The command also warned that any form of misconduct or abuse of power by officers will not be tolerated, stressing that disciplinary measures will be enforced where necessary.

The incident has sparked renewed public debate on police conduct and accountability in Nigeria, with many citizens calling for stronger reforms and stricter enforcement of discipline within security agencies, especially in cases involving young people and students.
