Sowore Criticizes US Strikes in Nigeria, Calls for Competent Domestic Leadership
Activist and political commentator Omoyele Sowore has condemned the recent U.S. military strikes in Nigeria, asserting that only capable Nigerian leadership, not foreign powers, can safeguard the nation and its citizens.
Sowore reacted on his X handle to reports that U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth authorized attacks on alleged terrorist groups in Sokoto State on Christmas Day.
“Although the Nigerian government claims it was aware and describes the operation as a joint effort with vague ‘international partners,’ it is evident that the strikes were carried out without genuine authority or informed consent of the weak leadership under President Bola Tinubu,” Sowore said.

He further criticized the U.S. for conducting the operations, arguing that the strikes reflected a lack of understanding of Nigeria’s security realities and genuine concern for its people.
“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, lacks the capable and sovereign leadership required to protect its people and territory,” he added, warning that the country has effectively become a bystander while its sovereignty is violated.
Sowore emphasized that only true, tested, and informed Nigerian leadership can effectively address the nation’s security challenges and cautioned against reliance on foreign powers or imperiled neoconservatives operating from Washington, D.C.
His comments contribute to the ongoing debate over foreign military involvement in Nigeria and the nation’s capacity to independently combat terrorism and insecurity.
