former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN
Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) has arrested former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), shortly after his release from Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, sparking fresh controversy over the handling of the high-profile case.
Malami was taken into custody by SSS operatives minutes after completing his bail process and exiting the prison facility, according to multiple reports. Videos of the arrest quickly circulated online, showing the former AGF being escorted into a waiting vehicle by security personnel.
The arrest comes amid ongoing investigations linked to an alleged multi-billion-naira money laundering case, in which Malami, members of his family and associates are standing trial before a Federal High Court. The charges, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), involve allegations running into ₦8.7 billion, which the defendants have denied.

The development follows days of tension at Kuje Prison, where Malami’s release was reportedly delayed despite meeting bail conditions, raising public concern over due process and inter-agency coordination. The situation was further complicated by the reported rearrest of Malami’s son after he was also granted bail in a related matter.
As of the time of filing this report, the SSS has not issued an official statement detailing the specific grounds for the latest arrest. Legal analysts say the move could trigger renewed debate over the balance between national security investigations and judicial authority in politically sensitive cases.
The unfolding case continues to attract national attention, with civil society groups and legal experts calling for strict adherence to the rule of law as investigations proceed.
