Tension in Onitsha Market as Armed Security Enforces Soludo’s One-Week Shutdown
Tension gripped the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State on Tuesday as heavily armed policemen, soldiers, and other security operatives enforced Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s one-week closure order. The move comes after traders defied repeated warnings and continued to observe the Monday sit-at-home directive, which has disrupted commercial activity across the South-East.
Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, NSCDC, and DSS were deployed to block entrances, barricade roads, and prevent traders from opening shops, turning the normally bustling market into a scene of frustration and tension. Some traders voiced anger at the shutdown, with video footage showing protests and marches within and around the market.

The Anambra State Government justified the shutdown, saying prolonged sit-at-home observances have caused the state and the wider South-East region to lose billions of naira in revenue and daily business activity. Officials describe the measure as necessary to restore economic normalcy and discourage the politicisation of market closures.
Reactions from stakeholders were mixed. Traders condemned the shutdown, highlighting the hardship it imposes on families reliant on daily trade. Meanwhile, authorities emphasized that the presence of armed security is aimed at maintaining order, protecting lives, and enforcing the law.
The standoff raises questions about whether traders will comply in the coming week or continue to resist, potentially escalating tension in one of West Africa’s busiest commercial hubs.
