Three LASUSTECH students die in tragic multi-vehicle crash in Ikorodu
Three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, lost their lives on Saturday in a fatal multiple-vehicle accident at Powerline Junction, before Aleje, inward Ikorodu Roundabout.
The crash, which threw the Ikorodu community into mourning, involved an unregistered tipper truck heavily loaded with sand, a Toyota Corolla (SMK 42 AJ), an MPV bus, and four tricycles.
Eyewitnesses said the tipper truck, which was reportedly speeding, suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and ram into several vehicles and tricycles.
Two male students and one female student died on the spot, while seven others, including tricycle operators, sustained serious injuries.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were among the first responders, confirmed the development, saying rescue operations were immediately launched to prevent further casualties and clear the wreckage.

According to LASTMA spokesperson, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, operatives were joined by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Odongunyan Division, and officers from the Shagamu Police Division in the rescue effort.
“Together, they rescued and swiftly conveyed seven critically injured victims to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment, while the three deceased casualties were respectfully evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital, Ikorodu mortuary,” Adebayo said.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young students and extended condolences to their families, praying for the quick recovery of those injured.
He described the crash as “avoidable”, blaming it on reckless driving, overspeeding, and poor vehicle maintenance.
“This tragic incident is yet another reminder of the dangers of disregard for safety regulations on Lagos roads. Vehicle operators, especially those driving heavy-duty trucks, must conduct regular mechanical checks and obey statutory speed limits,” Bakare-Oki said.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to promoting road safety, enforcing traffic laws, and ensuring swift emergency response across Lagos State.
Meanwhile, Saturday’s crash occurred barely three days after another multiple-vehicle accident at Ekoro Junction, inward Ile-Iwe, claimed the life of a tricycle operator and left two others critically injured.
Preliminary investigations into that incident also indicated brake failure as the cause, after a fully loaded trailer lost control, crushed a tricycle beyond recognition, and collided with several vehicles and nearby structures.
