Tinubu Hails Military After Nigeria Neutralises Coup Attempt in Benin
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Nigerian military for its swift and decisive action in helping to foil a coup attempt in the Republic of Benin, following an urgent request from the neighbouring country’s government.
According to a State House statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu immediately ordered Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets into Benin’s airspace after receiving two separate appeals for assistance from Cotonou.
The Beninese government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sought immediate Nigerian military support to protect its 35-year-old democracy, safeguard national institutions, and restore constitutional order after soldiers led by Colonel Pascal Tigri seized the National Television station and attempted to topple President Patrice Talon.
Responding to the emergency, President Tinubu directed the deployment of NAF air assets for surveillance and rapid intervention missions under Benin’s coordination. The Benin authorities also requested the deployment of Nigerian ground forces for operations approved by its military command, aimed at containing armed groups and securing democratic institutions.

President Tinubu, who also chairs ECOWAS, commended the armed forces for adhering to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, noting that Nigeria’s intervention helped stabilise a friendly nation.
“Today, the Nigerian armed forces stood gallantly as defenders of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin. They have made us proud by sustaining our democratic values,” the President said.
Tinubu affirmed that Nigeria remains firmly aligned with the government and people of Benin, emphasising the country’s commitment to regional peace, security, and democratic governance.
