Tinubu meets new Service Chiefs after major military shake-up
ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a closed-door meeting with the newly appointed service chiefs at the State House, following a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s military leadership last Friday.
The president had relieved the former service chiefs of their duties in what marks the second major reshuffle of the military command since he assumed office in May 2023.
In the new appointments, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede was named Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. Oluyede previously served as Chief of Army Staff.

Major General Waidi Shaibu takes over as Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke was appointed Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral Idi Abbas was named Chief of Naval Staff, and Major General Emmanuel Akomaye Parker Undiandeye retained his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The shake-up comes amid heightened attention on national security, following recent speculation about a failed coup plot — a claim the military has firmly denied.
The meeting at the State House is expected to focus on strategic defence priorities, inter-agency coordination, and the administration’s broader security agenda under the Renewed Hope initiative.
Observers say the appointments reflect President Tinubu’s intent to reposition the armed forces for greater efficiency and responsiveness to emerging threats.
