Hashim Dungurawa, the chairman of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, alleged on Sunday that President Bola Tinubu is attempting impose the appointment of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, due to his Yoruba background.

Dungurawa made these assertions while addressing journalists in Kano about NNPP’s accomplishments in the state over the past year.

According to Dungurawa, Tinubu is purportedly leveraging his relationship with Bayero to maintain his position in Kano. Despite the reinstatement of the previously deposed Emir Sanusi Lamido as the 16th Emir of Kano, Bayero continues to reside in the palace, with Sanusi at the main Kano emir’s palace and Bayero at the mini palace in Nassarawa GRA.

Expressing his stance on the Emirate controversy, Dungurawa argued against providing special security protection for Bayero by the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, and other agencies, against the interests of the state government. He cautioned that Tinubu’s involvement in the Kano Emirate dispute could lead to repercussions for the President in the 2027 elections.

“If the President believes he can use a few of his associates in Kano and Bayero’s alleged Yoruba heritage to keep the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero in the state, he should be prepared for a backlash in 2027. We will demonstrate that these actions will not benefit him,” Dungurawa warned.

He urged the President to intervene decisively to resolve the Kano Emirate crisis by ensuring the removal of the deposed Emir from Kano. Additionally, Dungurawa called for a review of the 2019 election results, contending that former Kano State Governor and APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje did not legitimately win his second term.

Banditry outcome of people neglected for centuries — Gumi

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed allegations that politicians are behind the rising insecurity in northern Nigeria.

In recent months, the North-West region has faced increasing banditry and violence, leading to the deaths of many, including the monarch of Gobir in Sokoto State. The unrest has sparked claims that politicians may be funding the violence for their own gain.

In 2021, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, alleged that some politicians were sponsoring the banditry seen across the country. However, in an interview with Punch, Sheikh Gumi denied these claims, stating that there is no evidence to suggest that politicians are fueling the unrest in the North.

He said;

“This is an unintelligent allegation. No politician is sponsoring these people. We are all victims. The opposition is not even behind this. This is a natural reaction of people neglected for centuries without education.

“Now they are exposed to the world and they want education. These people are exposed to the Internet and they see how much they are deprived. They want to fight back. This act is not by anybody.”
