Tinubu to give national honours on federal lawmakers [DETAILS]

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Thursday, June 12, 2025, confer national honours on a select group of federal lawmakers during a special joint sitting of the National Assembly.

The commemorative event, organized by the leadership of both the Senate and House of Representatives, will be held at the House of Representatives Chamber within the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Proceedings are scheduled to commence at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu expected to arrive at 12:00 noon to deliver a presidential address as the Special Guest of Honour.

Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday.

“The leadership and Honourable Members of the House of Representatives will participate in a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration,” Rotimi stated.

He noted that details of the session were formally communicated to lawmakers via an internal memorandum signed by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq.

Themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,” the event will highlight the contributions of the National Assembly to Nigeria’s democratic evolution and institutional growth.

According to Rotimi, “the programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by Mr. President.”

He described the joint sitting as “a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” and one that “underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”
