Nigerian troops have successfully neutralised a top Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) commander and disrupted multiple terrorist operations in the North-East, in a significant victory for the country’s counter-terrorism efforts.

The operation, conducted by the Nigerian Armed Forces, involved coordinated air and ground assaults on ISWAP strongholds in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, following weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance. Officials confirmed that the slain commander was a key figure responsible for orchestrating attacks on civilian populations, military convoys, and strategic installations.

Security sources revealed that during the raids, troops recovered arms, ammunition, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other tactical equipment, effectively thwarting planned assaults and limiting the operational capacity of ISWAP cells in the region.

“The elimination of this commander significantly disrupts ISWAP’s chain of command and hampers their ability to plan attacks,” a military official said. “Our troops remain committed to ensuring security and stability in the North-East.”

The military emphasized that this victory was the result of intelligence-led operations, inter-agency collaboration, and strategic planning aimed at eradicating terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities. Operations are ongoing to track down remaining insurgents and dismantle sleeper cells operating in the region.

Officials also called on residents to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious movements or activities to aid counter-insurgency efforts and accelerate the restoration of peace in North-East Nigeria.

The Nigerian military reaffirmed its resolve to continue proactive operations against insurgents, warning that terrorist networks will face relentless pressure until stability and normalcy are fully restored to affected communities.
