West Africa Insecurity: Tinubu Pushes Collective Military Response

President Bola Tinubu has renewed calls for the revival of the regional standby force in West Africa, stressing that growing insecurity across the subregion demands a coordinated regional security response.

Tinubu said the worsening threats of terrorism, violent extremism, cross-border crime, and political instability have exposed the limitations of isolated national responses, making regional cooperation more urgent than ever.

According to the president, reviving the West African regional standby force would strengthen rapid deployment capacity, enhance intelligence sharing, and enable timely intervention in crisis situations that threaten peace, stability, and constitutional order in member states.

He noted that armed groups, illicit arms trafficking, and transnational criminal networks continue to exploit weak borders and fragile security structures, posing a serious risk to economic growth and democratic governance in the region.

Tinubu emphasized that a functional standby force would serve both as a deterrent to security threats and as a stabilising mechanism during emergencies, including coups, insurgencies, and humanitarian crises. He added that the force must be supported by clear rules of engagement, sustainable funding, and strong political commitment from member states.

The Nigerian leader reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to play a leadership role in strengthening regional security architecture, noting that no single country can effectively confront West Africa’s complex security challenges alone.

He also called on West African nations to deepen military cooperation, harmonise security policies, and reinforce regional institutions to ensure lasting peace and stability across the subregion.

Tinubu’s push comes amid ongoing discussions among West African leaders on the future of regional security frameworks and the need for collective solutions to persistent security and governance challenges.
