UK has apologised to Obi over detection, says Atiku’s aide

The British government has apologised to Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, after immigration officials admitted they wrongly handed him a detention note.

Spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, Daniel Bwala, twitted this on Thursday.

The British officials had detained Obi for allegedly committing several financial crimes only to find out that he was being impersonated.

Obi was unlawfully detained and interrogated for hours by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London on April 7, 2023.

Bwala wrote, “British government apologised to Peter Obi for illegally serving him a detention note.

This however could not be confirmed at the British High Commission in Abuja. According to the head of the media unit of the High Commission, Dean Hurlock, the mission does not make comment on matters of that nature.

Head of Obi-Datti Media Office, Diran Onifade, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said Obi was wrongly detained over offences allegedly committed by an impostor who is on the run.

The statement added that the impostor could commit various crimes that would lead to the arrest of the LP flagbearer in the UK for duplication.
